PROBLEM FOR A JUDGE

LENGTH OF A SKIRT. A difficult problem came before Judge Moore, at Greenwich County Court, when he was asked to decide whether a woman’s dress was of a reasonable length.

Mrs Ethel Elizabeth Carpenter, of Arran Road, Catford, sued Mr W. Reef, of Rushey Green, Catford, for £5 10/- the price of a costume, which Mrs Carpenter declared was "too short, too tight, and impossible to wear.”

After carefully inspecting the costume, which Mrs Carpenter was wearing, the judge remarked: "I am not an expert, but it looks to me to be very smart.”

Mrs Carpenter: I shall never wear this again. Judge Moore: Although it may not be absolutely first-class, it is not one you are entitled to reject. He dismissed the case.
