IN TOWN AND OUT

NEWS OF THE DAY. Mill Road Property Sold. An area of 50 acres at Mill Road was disposed of by auction by Messrs Dalgety and Co. on Saturday. There was keen bidding and the price obtained, £3O an acre, shows that property in the locality is appreciating in value. * * * * Dominion Day. To-day is Dominion Day and bankers, lawyers, dentists and certain commercial men are observing a holiday. Actually the anniversary of the proclamation of New Zealand as a Dominion is September 26, for it was on that date in 1907 that the new status was assumed. * A Day of Warmth.

The glorious sunny conditions which prevailed yesterday attracted quite a large number of people to various resorts in and about Invercargill. Those who visited the Rose Gardens were treated to a fine programme of music by the Caledonian Pipe Band under Pipe-Major R. 0. Sutherland amid pleasant surroundings. Occasion was also taken by quite a large number to visit the Oreti bridge, the progress made with which caused much comment. Bluff and other near resorts also came in for their share of visitors.

The Farming Kings. "You will get a jolly fine trip lor £250. You could not do it as cheaply in any other way,” remarked Mr A. McKenzie, of Otahuti, at the monthly meeting of the Southland executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union on Saturday when explaining the contents of a brochure, a limited number of which were distributed, concerning a proposed overseas trip for dairy farmers. "I suppose the wool king could not do it under £500,” replied Mr Peter Arnott, of Wyndham. "The wool king won’t bo able to go at all with the drop that has taken place in wool lately,” retorted Mr McKenzie promptly.

„ » * » “What, Again?” says the Chief. This one comes from Nelson: During the war a Scottish farmer in a district not far from Nelson, presented a lamb to a patriotic bazaar, to be disposed of as the prize in a weight-guessing competition. Not only did he give the lamb, but he actually bought one ticket for himself and put his guess on it, 1371 b. When the last ticket was sold the lamb was put on the scales and weighed 13711 b, and a man was found who had guessed the correct weight and so got the lamb. The Scottish donor was perplexed, and later confided in a bosom friend the following: “I have made a terrible mistake. I weighed that lamb before I left home and it was 1371 b; it rained heavily when I was bringing it here, and I clean forgot to consider the extra weight of the water in its fleece.”

* * * Collision in McMaster Street.

The roadway outside the residence of the Mayor (Mr J. D. Campbell) in McMaster street was the scene of a collision shortly before 10.30 last evening between two cars, one of which was rather badly damaged as a result of the impact. The two cars struck in head-on collision, the right hand mudguard being the point of contact in each case, at a point where the roadway was narrowed, owing to street beautification work, to a width of IS feet with a rocky border on either side. At the time there were three cars parked on the street, these occupying some six or eight feet of the roadway. The motor car proceeding in a southerly direction was obliged to move over to pass the parked cars, but there was not sufficient clearance between it and the northward bound car with the result that the two vehicles collided. A front bumper on one of the cars saved it from much damage, the bumper itself being bent and the righthand mudguard slightly broken. The other car, which was not carrying a bumper, was rather badly damaged, the righthand front wheel being twisted, the windscreen damaged and general damage resulting to the body. There were several passengers in each car, but fortunately all escaped injury.
