The past month was one of the busiest experienced at Lyttelton for some time. No fewer than 23 overseas ships visited the port as compared with nine during April and 18 during May of last* year. In addi-

tion, a large number of coastal steamers loaded and discharged. The total gross tonnage for the month is not yet available, but it is considered that the gross tonnage for overseas ships will constitute a record for the port. Negotiations for the purchase of the dredge Maui, owned by the Gisborne Harbour Board, have been opened by the Marine Department, which at present has the dredge on- hire from the Gisborne Harbour authority at a rental of approximately £5OOO per annum (states the Poverty Bay Herald). The Maui is at present employed at Westport under the supervision of the department. The Marine Department has been advised that the board will be prepared to sell the Maui, with her equipment and additional set of new buckets, for £17,000. Should the deal go through, the Gisborne Harbour Board will be without a dredge suitable for general maintenance purposes, the Korua being too expensive a vessel to operate on maintenance work.
