SUSSEX SOLD
' PURCHASED FOR JAPAN. (Per United Press Association.) Auckland. June 4. Japanese buyers have purchased the 6957 ton Federal steamer Sussex for about £17,000. In place of the Sussex the Union Company has chartered the Naraba to load at Calcutta about the end of July. The steamer Sussex, the sale of which is reported to Japanese buyers, has been on the Calcutta run for some considerable time, and is a well-known trader in New Zealand waters, under charter to the Union Company. The vessel, which has called at Bluff frequently, was built at Newcastle-on-Tyne in 1900 and her principal measurements are: Length, 420 feet.; depth, 28.7 feet; beam, 54 feet. She is 6957 tons gross. The Sussex will be replaced by the British India Line steamer Narbada, which has been chartered to take the July-August loading at Calcutta for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Timaru, Dunedin and Bluff. The Narbada is 6800 tons gross.
