THE SOUTHLAND UNION. DATES OF REP. TRIALS ARRANGED. The Southland Rugby Football Union met last evening, Mr. C. A. Davis (president) presiding over the following members' Messrs. D. K. Torrance, J. C. Prain, W. Baird, F. Daubney, A. IL Stott, L. R. Lopdell and W. Robison-. The Invercargill second grade team were awarded the match against Pirates, set down for Saturday last, Pirates having defaulted. W. Cook’s (Blues) application for a regrade from first to second grade was referred to the Regrading committee. The secretary of the Rugby Park Croquet Club wrote forwarding £5 towards the cost of preparing the new green —Received. The Eastern District Sub-Union wrote asking for the definition of “hacking.”— It was decided to ask the New Zealand Rugby Union to supply a definition. M. Harrington (Old Boys) applied for a transfer to Pirates to enable him to play senior football. —Transfer granted. R. S. Green secretary of the Eastern District Sub-Union wrote as follows:— “Your letter of May 28 was considered by my committee at its last meeting when members expressed surprise at the attitude of your executive. I am -instructed to inquire as to the reasons prompting your Union in withholding from my committee a copy of the letter sent by your union to the New Zealand Rugby Union. Inasmuch as your union had the opportunity of scrutinizing and considering my letter to the New Zealand Union it would appear to be no more than a reasonable request to ask that my committee should know on what terms you wrote to Wellington.”— The letter was received. The above letter referred to Eastern’s decision to get a ruling from the New Zealand Rugby Union concerning the union’s decision in granting Holden permission to play in the town competition. It was decided to ask the New Zealand Rugby Union to make the Wairarapa— Southland match a Ranfurly Shield game, provided Wairarapa held the shield when Southland met them. It was decided to set aside July 6 and July 20 for trial games and that a third round of the senior competition be played. July 13 was set down for the first match for the Sports Trust Cup, Eastern being the challenger. Northern District are the present holders. The Otago Rugby Union wrote confirming the dates of the Otago—Southland games (July 31 and August 17), and agreeing to send the runners-up in- the Dunedin senior competition to Invercargill on August. 10 to meet the Galbraith Shield winners.— It was decided to hold a reply* concerning the game on August. 10 over in the meantime.
