LADIES’ HOCKEY

TOURNEY AT GORE. A SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE. The Eastern Ladies’ Hockey Association’s annual seven-a-side tournament, held on the hostel grounds, Gore, yesterday afternoon, was a highly successful one, and attracted centres from all over the province. The weather was dull but fine, and the various games were watched with keen interest by a very large number of spectators. Two competitions were held, the winning teams in the qualifying round going into the main competition and (he losers taking- part in the consolation tourney. Both were very interesting, and in the former there were some particularly close contests, that in the. semi-final between Collegiate A and Wyndham A being a fine.one to watch, the 'teams being very evenly matched. Wyndham’s win by a small margin was well-deserved, and its performance in defeating a team which has been successful in the last I 'three tournaments held at Gore was a highly creditable one. Wynd: ham went on to defeat Ex-High in the final, although the latter team made . an excellent contest of it. In the consolation tourney Wyndham scored a well-earned victory, but had some hard games before they succeeded in winning through to the final in which it defeated Miller’s Flat by one goal. , • ' _ At the conclusion of play Mr G. C. Hamilton, president, of the association, presented the cups to the winners and runners-up in both competitions. He congratulated the teams on the excellent displays they had given, and also made reference to the sporting spirit in which the games had been played. For the successful running of the tournament the association was indebted to its secretary, Miss R. Naylor, and to those who had very kindly given their services as referees. TOURNAMENT AT FEILDING. (Per United Press Association.) Feilding, June 3. One hundred and seventeen teams competed in the Feilding Hockey Association annual tourney on the polo ground. The weather was perfect. Eight playing areas were employed, but darkness overcame the organization at the finish. In the men’s games Woodville defeated Carterton by one goal to nil in the final. In the ladies’ section Hinekoa and Dannevirke Old Girls, though they played eight minutes over time, could not make a decisive stroke. The game ended in darkness and was declared a draw. Each team will hold the trophy for six months. MEN’S HOCKEY VISITING DUNEDIN TEAMS. TWO EXCITING MATCHES. SOUTHLAND A DRAW AND .A LOSS. The comparatively large number of spectators that turned out to Queen’s Park yesterday to watch the first tw r o important games of the men’s hockey revival in Southland, were given exhibitions of really good and fast hockey by both the Dunedin and the local teams. The results of the games were particularly satisfactory in view of the fact that same of the Southland members had not "■’played for ten years, and others had played only three games in their lives. In the first game Southland B team drew with the Otago Old Boys’ Club Colt team with the score of two all; in the afternoon game between the senior teams Otago Old Boys’ A team defeated Southland by four goals to two after a very keen and close struggle. Visiting players expressed the opinion that after a season’s practice Southland will be able to field at least two very strong teams. Otago Old Boys’ team is well up in the championship list at Dunedin and so far has won three out of the five games played in this year’s tournament. THE MORNING’S GAME. The following teams took the field in the morning match: — Otago Colts: Robinson; Harper, Tyrell; Read, Moen, Roberts; Callan, Lindsay, Lerrigo, Dyer, Kendrick. Southland B: Kidd; Bayne, Lindsay; Fraser, K. Hamilton, Mackley; Boyer, Tavener, Wren, Shaw, Edginton. Following the usual tendency in hockey, play was concentrated, on the left players and this was so marked as to be a weakness. Shortly after the first bully, Lindsay and Callan were away down the wing for Otago, but Kidd moved out of the goal and sent the ball high and dry almost to the half-way line amidst laughter. Nothing daunted, a similar attack was again launched by the left wingers and again Kidd manfully blocked them, this time dribbling the ball away by good stick work almost out of the circle. The ball was again sent out to Callan, who dashed past the opposition, passing finally to Lindsay, who shot and scored the first goal for Otago. Southland now rallied and play was concentrated for some time in Otago’s territory. Several goals seemed likely, but'in every case the final carry-through was lacking. At last Tavener, who played a keen game throughout, shot hard and high. In attempting to stop the ball the goalie was unfortunately struck hard on the head by it. The ball rebounded into play, but Shaw secured and put it through, equalizing the scores. Robinson, however, was temporarily knocked out and was forced to retire, his place being taken by Duckworth. Very • shortly after this Tavener was struck on the side of the face by the ball, but after a brief spell w r as able to return to the field. Otago initiated several strong attacks, but were repulsed by the Southland defence. Finally Edginton transferred play into safer quarters, and for some time close play was/witnessed, right in front of the goal-mouth. At last Wren was successful in beating the Otago defence and the score was made, Southland 2; Otago 1. A few seconds later half-time was sounded. Otago made it quite clear from the start of the second half that they were going to be on the offensive and Southland’s backs

were hard pressed. Southland at last got away on one of the best combination movements observed in the game. The ball was passed right across the forward line as it swept down the field. Tavener finally shot, but the ball missed the goal opening. Edginton was responsible for another good attack; at a suitable time he centred to Wren, who was directly in front of the goal. Wren unfortunately missed the ball, but had he hit it, is is probable that an “offside” penalty would have been ordered by the referee. Play was uneventful for some time until Callan, from a scramble in front of the posts, put the ball through and made the score: Otago 2; Southland 2. Despite strenuous efforts neither side was able to secure a further goal, and time sounded a few minutes later with Otago attacking. Mr R. J. Surgenor refereed the game. A gentleman who has followed the play of the Otago team, and who travelled with the team, expressed the opinion that every member acquitted himself well and the team as a whole was in good form. Both goalies had done excellent work and Harper and Tyrell had put, up very good defence. Read, Roberts and Moen he also singled out for particular mention. As far as the Southland team was concerned, Kidd as goalie showed very well that he is an experienced and able player and knows exactly when to run out and when not to. Bayne, as a full-back, performed well and has the makings of a fine player. Mackley surprised everyone by- his form yesterday, and he was undoubtedly the best half-back in the Southland side- K. Hamilton, a new recruit to the ranks of hockey, made it evident that in a short time he will be a leading player. Tavener was probably the strongest forward in the Southland team. THE SENIOR GAME. There was an even better attendance of spectators at the afternoon game, and again they were treated to an exciting and close game. In some respects the Southland senior team was a disappointment after the excellent display given by the comparatively inexperienced players who performed in the morning. At stages in the game there was a serious lack of co-ordination between forwards and backs and even the forward movements were inclined to be one-man affairs. This was only to be expected, however, from a team composed of good individual players who had never played before in combination. Despite that fault, which is easily rectifiable, the Southland team proved the statements of some who knew the true position, that one men’s hockey in Invercargill is properly started again, Southland will take a prominent place in hockey circles of New Zealand. The Otago team was as follows: —Duckworth; R. Haning, Tyrell; Gurr,. Smith, Clarke; McCracken, Callan, Webber, D. Hanning, Greenslade. The Southland team was: —McGrath; Lockhart, Patton; Webster, Hamilton, Surgenor; Richards, S. Smith, Sheriffs, O’Sullivan, Oakes. Play opened badly for Southland, for in the first few moments McCracken and Callan were away down the line and play was concentrated in the circle for some time until finally Callan hit through. Otago 1; Southland nil. S. Smith secured the ball from the bully and carried it down to Otago’s circle where it was hit out. From the corner Webber and Greenslade made determined attacks, but were all stopped by Patton, who sent the ball away again. D. Hanning, however, again attacked and passed to Greenslade, who scored. Otago 2; Southland nil. After some minutes of uneventful play Patton sent the ball to Sheriffs, who carried the ball to the ciicle where he sent to Oakes, who centred at a suitable moment back to Sheriffs, who goaled with a magnificent straight, high shot. Otago 2; Southland 1. Richards, who was responsible for much good work on the wing throughout the game, initiated a very promising wing movement, but a pass sent to S. Smith rendered the latter offside and the resultant free hit carried the ball to the Southland 25. Otago kept up the offensive and the Southland goalie made two good saves in succession. After a few minutes of up-and-down play Sbireffs secured the ball from a penalty corner and reached the circle with it. After a keen struggle S. Smith made an excellent shot and scored, making both teams equal witj) two goals each. With only a few minutes to go till half-time there was keen excitement as Richards made determined efforts to goal. From the side of the circle he shot, the ball was sent back by the goalie, he shot again and was again blocked, and the whistle blew as he prepared for another attempt. Shortly after the. beginning of the second spell McCracken and Callan attacked and . Webber was finally able to score. Almost immediately afterwards Clarke, who played a wonderful game throughout, sent the ball to Webber. Lockhart stopped, but Clarke secured and beat the goalie. Otago 4; Southland 2. With the exception of a few minutes during which the last two scores were made, the second spell was very even and intense. A good chance was lost by Southland when Shireffs, who had overcome all opposition except the goalie, was left without anyone to back him up when the ball was left to roll uncared for right in front of the goal. Lockhart later sent away to O’Sullivan, who in turn passed to Sheriffs, but his shot went astray. There was keen excitement as Southland continued to batter at Otago’s door. The final whistle blew a few minutes later. Messrs J. A. Robinson and J. Tavener acted as referees.
