BOROUGH COUNCIL

TO-NIGHT’S MEETING. APPOINTMENT OF COMMITTEES. The new council holds its first meeting at 7 o’clock this evening. Among the important business to be transacted is the appointment of the deputy mayor, the appointment of committees of the council, the setting up of an unemployment committee and the appointment of representatives on the Southland High School Board, Technical College Board, Museum Board, Employers’ Association, District Radium Fund, Southland League, Tramway Appeal Board and Transport Appeal Board. His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. D. Campbell) has instituted several changes in the method of dealing with business at council meetings. These changes in procedure should greatly curtail the time spent on the routine work of the council and enable greater time to be devoted to more important matters. Three days before the council meets all councillors will receive a copy of the agenda paper. This paper contains the minutes of the previous meeting, a precis of each letter addressed to the council since the previous meeting, reports of officers and reports of committees. In the past the committees’ reports have been gone through clause by clause, this taking considerable time. In future the reports will be moved in toto by the chairman of the respective committees. Should any councillor wish to comment on a particular clause he will have an oportunity to do so. The officers’ reports will, as in the past, be referred to the committees concerned. Letters from ratepayers must be in the Town Clerk’s hands by Friday to receive consideration at the meeting of the council on the Tuesday following.
