PLAN MISCARRIES

GELIGNITE PLACED ON STEAMER WANGANUI RIVER INCIDENT (Per United Press Association.) Wanganui, May 13. A box containing five pounds of gelignite with the necessary can and fuse was placed in the engine room of the Wanganui river service steamer Wakapai as she lay at the Pipiriki wharf last night. The fuse was lit but went out after it had burned to within a few inches of the cap. Access was gained to the engine room by breaking a window. The packet of gelignite was placed adjacent to the engine. The can was attached and a length of fuse ioined and run out to the shore. Evidently the culprit took the end of the fuse ashore then cut the headline with the result that the steamer swung out into the stream. Then the fuse was ignited but the plan miscarried. The police have been asked to investigate.
