WINTON BOROUGH

MEETING OF COUNCIL. (From Our Correspondent.) A meeting of the Winton Borough Council was held on Friday. Present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. A. Broom) and Councillors J. Brown, C. Stenhouse, A. Watson, N. Metzger, Dr. Gow. This was the second meeting of a totally new council with the exception of the Mayor. Correspondence was received from W. Hewitt drawing the attention of the council to the dangerous state of an outfall near his property.—To be attended to. W. Hagerty wrote asking for permission to erect an electric sign at premises occupied by H. Cooper.—Granted. Councillors N. Metzger and Dr. Gow reported to the council the result of a visit of inspection of a chemical fire fighting plant as submitted by the Invercargill Fire Brigade, and after a full discussion by councillors it was decided that the purchasing of the plant be held over in the meantime, most of the councillors agreeing that a water plant woudl be more suitable. It was also resolved that the council inspect the apparatus at present in use and that as late Councillor T. Gullick had been so closely connected with procuring same he be invited to attend. It was decider! that the works committee be empowered to obtain supplies of gravel by county lorries, Councillor Cooper having received advice from a county member that the lorries were available at the t present time. A request for employment by a local resident. was received, and the Mayor considered that there were quite a few unemployed in Winton at present. Councillor Metzger asked if it was not possible to obtain a Government grant in order to provide work during the winter. The position is to be looked into, and in the meantime it was thought that the cemetery committee could probably provide a position for a few days. The question of checking the activities of hawkers in the town was fully discussed. A legal opinion from the council's solicitors disclosed that nothing could be done in the matter until the borough was provided with a set of by-laws, covering any such question. It was disclosed that by-laws as required by the borough would, if procured, cost in the vicinity of £lOO and at present the council could not see its way to proceed with the matter. Councillor Cooper suggested that shopkeepers f>e requested to refrain from sweeping refuse directly on to the streets, an on Dr. Gow’s suggestion Monday, May 20, was fixed as a cleaning up day. Householders will be advised to have refuse placed in a handy place for the drayman. The 1928 balance-sheet was read and adopted.
