QUEENSTOWN NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.) The weather has been rather unsettled during the last few days. Snow fell on the higher altitudes and there is a touch of winter. At the time of writing it has cleared again and there is every prospect of bright weather over the week-end. Football. The second of the first round of eup matches took place on Saturday. In the senior grade Arrowtown met Glenorcby at the latter place and were defeated by 14 points to 7. Cornish, L. Cromer and C. Cook scored for Glenorchy and Heffennan converted one of the tries. The latter also kicked a penalty goal. For Arrowtown W. Brown kicked a penalty goal and Mackie potted a goal from the field. In the junior grade, Queenstown defeated Arrowtown by 14 to 6. In the first half of tlje game the honours were even —three points each. In the second half the Queenstown backs played a sterling game bringing off several excellent passing rushes and putting the score up to 14. Tries were registered by Ingles and Beale (2) and Kavanagh converted one try. R. Feehly kicked a penalty for Arrowtown. Glenorchy seniors meet Queenstown seniors on Saturday on the local ground and Quenstown juniors meet Arrowtown on the latter’s ground. Golf. In last Saturday’s golf G. H. Davies won the Maj- club button with a real score of 82 over 18 holes, D. F. Macdonald being runner-up for 84. Excellent conditions obtained. The King's birthday tournament will be held again the probable date of commencement being June 1. A match with the Cromwell Club is on the cards. The Belper badge is now being held by H. A. Cooke who defeated F. Stoop. The Steamer Service. On Monday last there was a slight disorganization of the Lake Wakatipu steamer service. After the Kingston steamer p-s. mountaineer backed out from the wharf and had commenced her forward movement she was carried over towards the wharf again and in passing the Earnslaw caught her paddle-box on the stern of the former. The collision caused some internal damage to the paddle-box so that paddles would not operate. She had scarcely got out of the bar when the Earnslaw, which was bound for the head of the lake, had to come to the Mountaineer’s assistance and tow her back to the wharf. Kingston-bound passengers and luggage were then transferred to the Earnslaw and the latter got away an hour behind time, but there would be little delay at Kingston as the Earnslaw would soon make the time up. After another hour’s delay during which necessary repairs were made, the Mountaineer sailed for the head of the lake and thus both services were completed for the day. No blame was attachable to anyone for the mishap. The Elections. The final figures for the County and Hospital Board elections are as follows: — Queenstown riding (two seats)—John Cockburn 79, Leo Lee 57, J. McMullan Junr. 48. Arrowtown riding (two seats) —F. S. Bloxham 97, W. S. Reid 80, W. H. Thompson 59. Hospital Board (one seat)—John Cockburn 343, J. McMullan Junr. 265. In the election for the Queenstown riding McMullan has asked for a recount as he is only nine votes behind Lee. General.
