KOTEMAORI TUNNEL
CONDITIONS OF WORKERS. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, May 10. A statement of the conditions of work being encountered in the driving of the Kotemaori Tunnel on the Wairoa —Gisborne railway was made to-day by Mr. Cook, secretary of the New Zealand Workers' Union in repudiation of what he described as the “grossly unfair and misleading” report recently regarding the rates of pay on the job. . . . According to Mr. Cook, conditions in the tunnel, owing to the wet and the nature of the country, are particularly bad and the men are asking only a fair thing. In response to an inquiry to-day, the Minister of Public Works said the inspecting engineer of the department was at present in the Napier district looking into statements made with regard to the tunnel and pending receipt of the report he had no statement to make.
