NOTES FROM AUCKLAND. THE FRANKLIN MEETING. FIRST DAY’S FORM AT HAWERA. (Special to the Tinies.) Auckland, May 10. Particular attention is being paid to the meeting of the Franklin Racing Club at Pukekohe to morrow for there is already a good deal of discussion as to how they managed to get an extra permit. However, they have it and will race to-morrow. Wonderful acceptances have been received and winners are sure to be hard to find. Two races have been divided, the Trial Handicap being run as one race but. the totalisator will be open on each division of the Franklin Stakes. The course is in fairly good order and will provide good going unless further rain falls. The following should be well supported in their engagements: TRIAL STAKES, first division (11.15 a.m.) : Cruachan and Parfait Amour. Second division (11.20 a.m.) Loving Cup and Diamond Queen. Dividends will be paid on the winners of each division only m this race. RAMARAMA HIGHWEIGHT (12.10) Brampton and Always. PUKIKAWA HACK (12.55)Leitrim and Brilliant Light. MASSEY. The Hawera course may be improved on Thursday’s going when it was heavy after overnight rain. The' following should be capable of improving on their first days form and may be backed accordingly. SHORTS HACK HANDICAP:—Denier and Airway. DAVIDSON HANDICAP:—Paitonu and Teri. BOROUGH HACK HANDlCAP:—Kawhakina and Clover Leaf. Lady Quex was one of the unlucky runners at Hawera yesterday. She did not like the track which was cutting up badly by the time the sprint came on and she really did well to finish a good second. She was off the course all the way up the straight, giving Green a difficult ride. In the same race, Booster finished fourth and on this showing he should get some money on the northern trip. Teri failed to see out the ten furlongs of the Mcßae Memorial at Hawera yesterday but to-morrow’s race will suit him better, also the state of the ground. One of his most dangerous opponents may be Paitonu who finished fourth at Te Rapa tn a big field in a mile event won by Lucy Rose. This race was won last year by Paitonu who apparently likes racing on his home course. . . A very poor attempt at ruling a finish was witnessed when C. France endeavoured to push Richfield home in the opening event at Hawera. L. G. Morris on Denier put it well over France and it looked as if Richfield was a good thing beaten. He will not lack friends to-morrow and it. will be surprising if he does not make amends. An improved course will be in his favour too. A couple of seasons ago Denier was one of the speediest hacks in the country but .. then he struck a lean patch. His fine gallop at Hawera last Tuesday morning should have prepared for his comeback but he was allowed to pa’' a fine price. To-mor-row Denier has been paid up for in both five and six furlong hack events and while he stands a chance in both, it is more than probable that the Shorts Handicaps, five furlongs, will be his mission for he generally hits the front early and likes to stay there for as long as he can. It is probable that trouble will come from Airway who is <1 bit of a flier over this distance too. Glengariff owed his hurdle success yesterday mainly to W. Bowden’s excellent riding, for he’ clearly out-rode the others. Alan McDonald allowed him to do so. The latter did not ride a good race on Red Fuchsia, who was kept too close to the pacemakers with his weight. ’Die latter s two latest defeats will not rob him of any admirers for the Great Northern Hurdles engagement. Having his first race over the sticks since he fell at the penultimate fence when going strong in the last Great Northern Hurdles twelve months ago, Mister Gamp did exceedingly well to get so close to Glengariff at Hawera. He is in great nick and, with a bit of luck, he may be expected to play a conspicuous part in next months Great Northern Hurdle contest, at Ellerslie, in which he is a sure starter barring accidents. Roman Abbey outjumped and outpaced the field in yesterday's Egmont Steeplechase and even his owner was surprised but delighted, too, with his performance which enhances his prospects for the Great Northern Hurdles and Steeplechase, in which the stable has another good one in Wedding March engaged. Roman Abbey upset? the opposition yesterday by his pace, and even Puwhero failed to go and jump with him. Brigadier Bill had a chance at the second to last fence, but he rapped it hard and lost some ground. Perhaps with Roman Abbey out of the way to-morrow Puwhero and Brigadier Bill will come into their own. Spear-miss was most unlucky in the principal flat event at Hawera yesterday for, as usual, she had to make up a lot of ground in the straight. She was travelling fast in*second place three-parts of a length from the little-fancied Hipo and was in front a few strides past the post. Spoarmiss usually does this and in good company cannot always afford to concede such starts in the last furlong and a half. Kawhakina won the final event at Hawera yesterday impressively. He could have collared the leaders at any part of the journey, but ran up behind at the home turn. Then in a few strides he had them all beaten, winning comfortably by a couple of lengths. He is in again to-morrow and the shorter distance will suit him. Danger may come from Clover Leaf, who was made a lot of use of yesterday. So far as the current season has progressed the Te Awamutu trainer W. Stone has turned out a dozen winners, a score that might have been much better with a little luck. It is probable that the stable will have a good run at Pukekohe to-morrow, for it has three good ones engaged. This formidable trio is comprized of Cruachan (Trial Handicap, first division), The Begum (Harrisville Flying) and Schorr (President’s Handicap). All of these are in tip-top form as their recent outings have shown, so they should do well at Pukekohe. RACING AT-NEW YEAR. ' ATTEMPT TO FORM OTAGO CIRCUIT. (From Our Special Representative.) Dunedin, May 10. The fact that the Oamaru Jockey Club is applying for January 2 and 3 next season as the racing dates will create oposition from the Wyndham and Southland Racing Clubs as the establishment of a Waikouaiti-Oamaru circuit during the first three days of the new year season will not be to the advantage of home turf institutions. With the Dunedin Jockey Club racing on December 26 and 28 the Otago circuit referred to would be strengthened but this will affect the Gore and Winton Trotting Clubs.

Winter meeting were:—Gaze 11.28 for all engagements; Prodice 9 a.m. for Cornwall Handicap. AUCKLAND TROTTING CLUB. REDUCTION IN STAKES. (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, May 10. Owing to the bad season financially, due to unfavourable weather, the Auckland Trotting Club decided to reduce all stakes for the Winter meeting on Juno 22 and 24 except the Adams Cup. The scale of reductions is: £l,OOO to £750; £5OO to £400; £4OO to £300; £3OO to £250. The only alteration in the condition governing entries applies to the Prince of Wales Handicap and Mark Memorial, originally open to horses which had gone 4.31, and now open to horses that have gone 4.31, or have been handicapped to do it. SOUTHLAND RACING CLUB. PUBLICATION OF DIVIDENDS. FAVOURED BY COMMITTEE. The committee of the Southland Racing Chib met last evening, Mr W. T. Hazlett (president) presiding over a good attendance of members. In connection with the club’s autumn race meeting it was decided to apply for Wednesday and Thurday, May 14 and 15, 1930, subject to any slight alteration that may be made to fall in with the wishes of the May Fair Committee and Agricultural and Pastoral Association. The New Zealand Racing Conference advised that the annual conference would be held in Wellington on July 12. Mr W. T. Hazlett was appointed the club’s representative to attend the conference. A letter was received from the New Zealand Racing Conference with reference to the Gaming Bill. A resolution was passed in favour of the passing by Parliament at next session of a Gaming Bill providing for the telegraphing of investments on the totalisator to secretaries of clubs and for the publication of dividends. The Invercargill Trotting Club submitted for the approval of the Racing Club March 5 and 6, 1939, for the dates of its annual trotting meeting. These were approved. In view of the fact that the agreement of lease between the Southland Racing Club and Invercargill Trotting Club expires on August 31 it was decided to draw up a new agreement for a further period of five years. The annual meeting was fixed for July 26.

CROQUET. WAIHOPAI CLUB. The Waihopai Croquet Club held a very successful afternoon on Friday afternoon, April 26, the occasion being the closing of the greens for the season. The weather was perfect and there was a large attendance of friends and members of other clubs. Competitions were held during the afternoon, the following being the winners: Golf croquet, Mrs Booth (Northend); angles, Mrs L. Smith (Northend). French croquet, Mrs Vickery (Southland); pegging, Mrs Blue (Northend). At the conclusion of afternoon tea Mrs E. Watt (president) presented the prizes to the winners of the various competitions held bv the club during the year as follows: A championship, silver cup _ and gold button, Mrs Nicholson; B championship, silver cup and silver button, Mrs Winning! C championship, silver cup, presented by Mr G. Munro, Mrs P. Mills; top of A ladder, prize presented by Mrs E. TO-DAY’S MATCHES. FAST AND EXCITING PLAY ANTICIPATED. Once again, as in many season’s gone by, Star and Pirates meet to decide who shaU be the leaders in the first round of the Galbraith Shield competition. An all round improvement has been noticeable in club football this season, this being especially cheering in view of the tour of the North Bland by the Southland representative team, lhe Star team’s display against Southern last week was an excellent one from every point of view and showed that this team is at the top of its form and fit to con *? ± tnich a deciding game as the one to-day. The Otautau “Moths” journeyed to Winton on Wednesday to play a match with the High School team, the cars being kindly lent by Messrs McCulloch and Mcladgen. Despite the rain which fell all the afternoon a splendid game was played, resulting in a win for High School by 6 points to 4. rhe “Moths” had the best of the game in the first half, the whole team combining well. In the second half their play went off considerably, showing lack of training.
