LEAGUE OF NATIONS.
To the Editor. Sir,—lt is good to note an awakening local interest in the League of Nations and its work. The League’s machinery for the prevention of war can work, it has worked, it will continue to work only if the essential condition of the League’s success is fulfilled. That essential condition is the support of public opinion, without which no democratic institution can flourish or survive. To fulfil this condition of the League’s success is the business of the League of Nations Union and other similar societies existing in over thirty countries. The first concern of the union is to see that the schools and colleges give to the next generation of British citizens a new outlook on world affairs so that they may understand the meaning of the changes that have come over the world and particularly over the nature of war; so that they may abandon the old interpretation of things, with its absolutely independent sovereign States, its glittering prizes, its shining swords; and so that they may realise the need for international co-operation and for the achievement of peace and security through the League of Nations. The League of Nations Union has, during the ten years of its existence, been of incalculable value to the cause of the League of Nations. Without that help the League might not have survived: it cer. tainly would not have achieved the very remarkable success it has gained. In view of the interest evidenced by recent correspondence in the local Press, could not an arrangement be made by the local branch of the union to instruct citizens through your columns on the aims and achievements of the League, thus helping to . create a healthy’ and informed public opinion on this matter?.—l am, etc., < PEACE.
[Preparations are already in hand to supply the need mentioned by our correspondent.—Ed. S.T.]
