SYDNEY GANGS
GREATER POWER FOR POLICE. CONSIDERATION BY CABINET.’ Sydney, May 10. The Chief Secretary, Mr Chaffey, stated that greater power for the police in dealing with gang warfare would be considered speedily by Cabinet. “I am of the opinion,” he said, “that increased power is needed by the police in certain cases, and legislation is being prepared to give them the necessary assistance. Nothing can be done till Parliament meets in September, but in the meantime the police will be prepared to meet any development of the present situation, and will see that the people are protected and law and order maintained.”— Australian Press Association.
