INFORMAL VOTES
WELLINGTON CITY COUNCIL. (Special to the Times.) Wellington, May 10. The feature of the final figures in conr nection with the Wellington City Council election is the number of informal votes recorded, 214 in the case of the mayoralty and no fewer than 4047 for the council. Indications are that there will also be a large proportion of informal votes in connection with the Harbour Board, Hospital Board and loan issue returns. The extraordinary number in the council contest is explained by opponents of the present voting system by the fact that voters are required to strike out names until the requisite number of councillors remains, instead of marking the favoured candidates, with a cross as obtained previously. No doubt this accounted for many nugatory votes as the effect of leaving one name too many untouched rendered the ballot paper valueless.
