This was really a very good entry, and I was surprised and delighted to see such development of style in the story writing. Some of you seem to have most difficulty over your tenses—remember that if you begin a story in the present tense, it must remain in the present throughout; if in the past, then don’t change to the present. Cousin Beatrice Witsey has a very fine style and an admirable control of words — I would advise her to read a lot and try in every way to increase her general knowledge, which should prove useful to her work. Cousin Lorna Thomson is doing very good work for a new cousin; and Peter Ferguson, as usual, is irresistibly funny; but he must watch his punctuation. And do you know one Cousin actually said “for to go”! which is as bad as Peter’s “would have went”! The paintings were very prettily and artistically arranged, and I was pleased to receive such a large entry. The subject was one which lent itself to some very colourful designs, and the prize winners showed an appreciation of autumn colouring which was a pleasant revelation to me. —COUSIN BETTY. 199th COMPETITION (a) For Cousins under 16.
