BOYS’ AND GIRLS’ CLUBS. RESULTS OF--SOUTHLAND COMPETITION.’ ‘ Results of the first potato growing competition promoted by the Southland Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Clubs' Association were finalized yesterday, and the results were made available by the secretary of the association (Mr J. E. Davies).* A summary of the season’s work which was also given states that 23 schools had entered the competition' comprising 167 competitors of which 147 or 88 per cent, had been represented at the final judging. Two plots had been destroyed by stock and eight competitors had retired through leaving the district or through illness. The heaviest weight crop had averaged. 31} tons to the acre while the average weight had been 16} tons to the acre. The average cultivation marks awarded ‘(maximum 30) had been 25.2, general appearance (maximum 10) 6.8 and quality (maximum 10) 7.2. The group prizes were won as follows:— Group I.—Kennington, Rimu, Edendale, Wyndham, Wyndham South, Mimihau, Redan, Mokoreta, Tuturau (67 competitors). (27 competitors.) Henry Middleton, Lora Gorge, 85} pts 1 Lex Gerrard, Winton, 84 points .. .. 2 Stewart Irwin, Winton, 83 points .... 3 The championship award to the competitor gaining the highest aggregate points in the competition (medal presented by Trustees of the Reginald MacKinnon Trust) was won by Dudley Tayles, East Gore School, 101} points. Special prizes were awarded as follows: (a) Competitor gaining highest points in cultivation and general appearance (maximum total 40), Desmond Hillis, Kennington, 40 points; (b) Competitor gaining highest points for record chart (maximum, 30), Greer Miller, Gore, 30 points.
