Lord Haldane, just before his death completed his autobiography which will be published by Hodder and Stoughton. The story begins with lord Haldane as a youth awakening to the riches of religion and philosophy. It will contain the history of the Labour Cabinet from the inside—told for the first time —and the full text of Lord Haldane’s letter to Mr Ramsay Macdonald, giving his reasons for joining the Labour Party. After a long silence A. S. M. Hutchinson, the author of “If Winter Comas” and other “best sellers,” has written a new novel. He gives it the title “The Uncertain Trumpet,” and is listed by Hodder and Stoughton. They also promise a romance by Mr John Buchan “The Courts of the. Morning,” which is in the stamn style of pure adventure as his “Prester John.”

Messrs -J. M. Dent are about to give us in two volumes in their “Everyman” Library the complete and unabridged text of the Urquhart and Motteux translation of Rabelais. Other new “Everyman” volumes are to include Mary Wollstonecraft’s “The Rights of Woman,” “Lord Chesterfield’s Letters to his Son,” and a volume of “Elizabethan and Jacobean Shorter Novels,” with an introduction by Professor George Saintsbury.

The study of Beethoven which Romain Rolland has written, and which Mr Victor Gollancz will publish in English, is a very elaborate work. It is entitled “Beethoven the Creator,” and that suggests the spirit in which the author approaches his subject; not merely the composer, but the man, his soul, and his mind. M. Rolland has had access to many hitherto unpublished papers about Beethoven. Ernest Newman has done the English translation, and the book will be fullv illustrated.
