WAIKAIA NOTES

' (From Our Correspondent.) Beautiful weather prevailed for the opening of the shooting season, ducks being very' plentiful and many good bags being obtained. Several parties secured the limit. Two rather painful accidents occurred last week. On May 2at the Winding Creek mine Mr E. McGregor was turning the water valve, when by some mischance a piece of it fell and cut off a joint of the first finger of his left hand. On May 4 at Waikaia Bush, Mr. P. Bradzon met with a severe accident while felling trees. A branch fell and struck the saw inflicting a nasty wound on Mr Bradzon’s back. Both sufferers are in Gore for treatment and are progressing favourably. Plunket Society. The monthly meeting of the Plunket Society was held on May 3, Mrs Pinckney (president) presiding over a good attendance of members. Nurse Wilson reported that during the month of April two visits were paid to Waikaia the number of visitors to the rooms were: adults 13, babies 9, older children 4. This was very satisfactory for the first month, but she hoped more mothers would take an interest in the society and would avail themselves of the help to be derived from it. The collectors for the May appeal week handed in their books, the amounts are as follows: —Mrs Pinckney, £l5 4/-; Mrs Sutton, £7; Mesdames R. H. Garvey and Thomas, £6; Mrs Dennis, £5 7/-; Mrs Alex. Christie, junr., £3 14/6. Total £37 5/6. Personal. Mr and Mrs Colin Robertson, Freshford, are on a visit to their son,- Dr. Robertson, of Christchurch. The Rev. R. F. Fish, who has been on sick leave, has returned to Dunedin. Miss Hope Pinckney (Glenaray) has returned from her holiday at Timaru. Miss Hargreaves (Geraldine) is the guest of Mrs Pinckney (Glenaray). Mr Foston gave a very interesting and instructive lecture on the Maori race in the Masonic Hall for the school children.
