LUMSDEN NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.) The arrangements for the forthcoming school jubilee celebrations were advanced a further stage on Tuesday when Mr A. McAlister presided over a large attendance. The matter of the Andrew Small memorial was fully discussed and it was _ finally decided to place a memorial slab in the school buildings. Mr W. J. Martin was appointed to make arrangements for the unveiling ceremony. Miss Hazel Congreve and Mrs McColl, Invercargill, wrote offering to donate the jubilee cake. The offer was accepted with thanks and the secretary was instructed to ask Mrs A. Gibson, Athol, to perform the ceremony of cutting the cake. Arrangements were made for the catering at the banquet by. the members of the association of ex-pupils. • , It was decided to issue complimentary tickets to the old identities of the district. The ex-pupils’ banquet will be held in the Masonic social hall and it. was decided to make the function open to ex-pupils and their wives or husbands. Mr A. G. Small was appointed to make arrangements for the jubilee ball and Mr L. McKenzie kindly offered to arrange for musical items. The following arrangements were made for Sundav. June 2. Ex-pupils to assemble at post office at 2.30 p.m. and march to the recreation grounds for the combined church service at 3 p.m. at which all residents will be invited to be present. General News. On Monday a meeting of all interested in motor racing was held when there was a large attendance of enthusiasts. Mr G. Rodgers occupied the chair and stated that the meeting had been called to consider the advisability of forming a committee to make arrangements for next year’s racing. A suitable ground had’ been secured and he felt that Jhe time was opportune to make a move to have a dirt track put in order. The following office-bearers were elected: Chairman, Mr G. Rodgers; secretary. Mr W. Williamson; assistant secretary, Mr E. H. Wildey. The following were elected to the committee of management: Messrs H. Belsham, C. Rodgers, J. Williamson, L. Brotherston. Arrangements were made to have the track put into first class order for next season’s racing. . The whole distance of one mile is to be ploughed, rolled and graded. The following is the first grade football team to play Waikaia at Lumsden on Saturday: V. Richards, T. Ibbotson, J. Ogilvy, M. Reidy, W. Hazlett, G. Tomlin, G. Senior, G. Small, A. Johnson, U. Crosbie, W. Wellman. D. Ogilvy, A. Reidy, P. Mcßride, F. Crosbie.

Mr W. L. Hunter, stationmaster at. the local railway office, has returned from his annual holidays. During his absence he has been relieved by Mr F. Roberts. Visitors to the district for the opening of the duck shooting season included Mr C. Turnbull an ex-resident. He was successful in securing a good bag. Recent guests at the Railway Hotel were Dr and Mrs Colin Ross, Berlin, who are on a world, tour and have been visiting the Southern Lakes. The visitors spent several days in the Lumsden district. Mr J. McFadden has been appointed to the position of town clerk, a position recently held by Mr Robert "Key who has resigned. During his term as clerk Mr Key has proved to be an obliging and capable official, and the general public and town board members sincerely regret the severing of his connection with the board.
