SPLIT VOTE FEARED.

Dunedin, April 23.

The Electoral Committee has been endeavouring unsuccessfully to get two of the non-Labour candidates for the Mayoralty to withdraw, fearing that with five candidates any one might be returned on a split or minority vote. Councillor Douglas, a former Mayor, offered to withdraw if Mr John McDonald, also a former Mayor, would also withdraw, which he declined to do. It looks as though "all five candidates will go to the poll.
