LEAGUE OF NATIONS

LOCAL BRANCH OF UNION. The local branch of the League of Nations Union met on Friday afternoon. The president (Mr W. Macalister) occupied the chair. The president and Mr A. E. Featherstone were appointed to meet the Education Board in regard to educational work in schools. The new syllabus provides for lessons on the Covenant and the work of the League of Nations. This is very gratifying but it is not enough. Wherever the lecturers have gone teachers have expressed great appreciation of the visit and of . the help it was, not only io the pupils but to themselves and the teaching of_ the subject. It is felt that the union, if it is given the facilities, can render very useful service in this regard. It us hoped that, before long the branch may have a library of League of Nations literature, to wluch teachers can be given access.. I he pretddent reported having met with the teachers at the recent' meeting of the Teachers Institute and being verv cordially received. Mr A. E. Featherstone was appointed delegate to the Dominion conference of the League of Nations Unions of New Zealand, which is to be held in Wanganui in May. The following remit was approved for transmission to the conference: “That it be a recommendation to the branches in New Zealand that, with the consent of the con-

trolling authorities, visits be paid by members of the League of Nations Union to the public and private schools in the various education districts, for the purpose of | giving instruction on the league and its work.” Details for a continuance of the membership campaign, and for extending the range of the union’s work were discussed and arrangements made. Among other things, it is hoped that a meeting with representatives of the Returned Soldiers’ Association to discuss the work of the League of Nations, and the possibility of some measure of cooperation be held. A weekly League of Nations column in the Southland Times has been arranged for and at the request of the committee Mr A. E. Featherstone undertook to ’ edit it for a period, members of the comi mittee to render every possible help in providing material.
