SPORTING

NOTES BY SIR MODRED.

The Hawkes Bay Jockey Club’s Autumn meeting will conclude at Hastings today.

The Whangarei Racing Club’s Autumn fixture will continue and conclude this afternoon.

A 'very interesting Autumn fixture is promised by the Ashburton 1 rotting Club to-day (Saturday).

Entries for the Wanganui Jockey Club’s Winter meeting on May 16 and IS close on Monday, April 29.

..The Nelson Jockey Club’s Annual meeting comes up for decision mu Friday and Saturday of next week.

A number of New Zealand-bred horses may be found competing at the Moorefield meeting in Sydney to-day.

A well-known Hawkes Bay writer expresses the opinion that. Toxeuma will defeat Silver Paper to-day.

The handicaps for the first day of the Forbury Park Trotting Club's Winter fixture are due on Thursday next.

A rough balance-sheet discloses the fact that the Wyndham Trotting Club’s meeting resulted in a £403 odd profit.

Very satisfactory entries have been received for the Forbury Park T.C. Winter meeting, with Southland owners strongly represented.

Trainer G. New has five rising two-year-olds by Hunting Song (imported) in his training quarters near Awapuni course.

A. E. Ellis heads the New Zealand winning jockeys’ list with 45 successes, R. Reed claims 44 wins and L. J. Ellis has 43 points.

Costing 9,500 guineas recently, imported Rossendale is seventeen years of age, and he has been standing at a fee of 200 guineas.

An anxious inquirer is informed that entries for the Dunedin Jockey Club’s Winter meeting on June 3 and 5 close on Friday, May 10th.

For the first time in history a Kentucky Derby winner will appear in competition on an English track when Reigh Count steps out.

Another crack American racehorse, Mike Hall, who is out of a Catmint mare, is to be taken to England to race in leading events.

Following on a race in the G. B. Starkey Memorial Handicap at Amberley, Amor who has been racing throughout the season, is to be spelled.

Northern followers of the light harness game are now on the look out for the winner of the New Zealand Sapling Stakes due in June.

Maorilander Tuki was favourite under 11.4 when he ran fourth in the Second Steeplechase on the last day of the A.J.C. meeting, after trying to lead throughout.

The Archery mare. Cupid’s Dart, has left Invercargill and will in future be found working with Andrew McKay’s successful string on Riverton tracks.

The champion Victorian three-year-old, Strephon, who is said to be labelled for a visit to England, has now won £17,632 on Australian courses.

When Samphire won the valuable Second Steeplechase on the concluding day of the recent A.J.C. meeting, he was piloted fiy the ex-Maorilander, O. Cullum.

The five-year-old gelding Battlement, by Martian —Polymnia, broke down prior to Easter at Hastings, and his owner will retire him from the tracks.

The pacer Nell de Beau, who is to race at Ashburton to-day and claims entry at Forbury, is a three-year-old filly by Nelson Bingen—Elie de Bumont, in R. Berry’s stable.

Heavy rain fell in Hawkes Bay early in the present week and northern experts were afraid that the Hastings track would ba holding for the Hawkes Bay J.C. races.

Provided the acceptance list can be actvepted as a reliable guide, the N.Z. Sires’ Produce Trotting Stakes, on the opening day of the F.P.T.C. meeting, should provide a good race.

Judging from recent reports the Wyndham Trotting Club continues to make steady progress, and as a result of its recent fixture a further £3OO is to be placed at fixed deposit in the Bank of N.Z.

Aged Mountain Crag, by Mountain Knight —Petit Tor, whois now trained by Mrs A. McDonald for Mr C. F. Vallance, is expected to win good cross-country races during the, winter season.

It Is reported from Canterbury that H. B. Hubbard is working a two-year-old by l Drusus from the dam of Brixton. The youngster is well-grown, and, like most of his sire’s progeny, is a well-gaited pacer.

It is satisfactory to learn that the enthusiastic breeder of Red Boa, Attractive Lady, Baldowa and Sentinel Lad, Mr R. B. Stiven, is making a good recovery from a severe bout of sickness following on the Easter term.

The three leading cross-country events at Wingatui in June will be: Otago Steeplechase, £5OO (about 31m.), Wingatui Steeplechase,' £340 (about 24m.), and the Dunedin Steeplechase, £340 (about 24 m.) — there are three other steeplechases.

The handicaps for the Oamaru J.C’s. Winter fixture on Saturday, .May 4th, are due about Tuesday next, and acceptances will close at 8 p.m. on Friday, April 26. Mr J. E. Henrys (gallops) and Mr H. A. Jarden (trots) are the handicappers.

Cupid’s Dart was well when she left here for her new quarters in Riverton and the decision to keep her going in the meantime may lead to satisfactory results, provided this somewhat delicate galloper continues to improve.

“Sentinel” writes in the Otago Daily Times that an attempt is to be made to convert Equerry into a hurdler, and that he bucked over a couple of flights of hurdles on Thursday. Membo is another recruit to the batten game.

The Australian-bred gelding, Gold Cup, by Woorak—Golden Beauty, and the rising three-year-old filly, The Graphic, by Paper Money, have been turned out for a spell by F. W. Ellis. Gold Cup improved to some extent after he arrived in Invercargill and may do better when the spring season comes round.

Local trainer li. McKay will presently undertake the education of a younger half-sister to Polling Day. The filly, who is described as a promising sort, is a daughter of Some' Boy 11. and Ruthful (dam of Insurrection, by Kilbroney), who ranks as an Australian-bred mare by Ruenalf—Clementine, by Lennox —Henrietta, by Martini Henry (a son of Musket and winner of the Melbourne Cup and V.R.C. Derby in 1883). Polling Day, by Gay Lad, failed to win a race this season, But may do better later on, as he is a smart galloper in private, but has so far failed to realize his responsibilities when stripped in public.

F. J. McKay is keeping Apache, Paris, Latin Quarter, Lucky Light and Greenstone

moving along in view of immediate engagements. Latin Quarter lightened up to some extent during the Riverton R.C. meeting, but is now building up again. Greenstone looks very well at present and has apparently taken a new lease of life under a trainer who appears to understand the Pallas gelding—in past years he was difficult to restrain, but McKay has induced him to settle down quietly to business.

Brightling continues to make progress n his education as a hurdler and the jumping game appears to agree with him, as he is looking well at present. In addition to his candidate for batten honours, J. McChesney is devoting close attention to the preparation of Coomassie and the Some Boy 11. mare is getting through satisfactory tasks on the S.R.C. tracks. She stood up stoutly to her racing at Riverton and should be well forward if called upon to play her part at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s Winter fixture.

Sturdy little Solzia is a compulsory paddock patient at the present time suffering from the effects of a kick on a tendon sustained during the progress of the Riverton R.C’s. Annual fixture. The kick was a very severe- one and his trainer, G. Hope, is anxious as to its ultimate effects. In tlie meantime the North Invercargill mentor is giving a considerable amount of attention to the preparation of the pacing mare, Shady Spot, who has been nominated for the Forbury Park Trotting Club's Winter fixture next month.

The steeplechaser, Jovial, has disappeared from the local tracks and it is understood that he is now acting as schoolmaster to a number of yearlings undergoing the educational process to carry the well-known racing jacket of Mr W. T. Hazlett.

A chestnut filly in R. McKay’s team, who has taken kindly to her early education, ranks as a well-bred aspirant for turf distinction, as she is a daughter of Balboa from a mare by Fleetham—Becky Seatoil. She is a typical descendant of her sire, low and thick-set, and there is no reason why she should not furnish into a useful racer.

Several interesting training track bouts have been witnessed on the S.R.C’s. clay path of late in which Imperial Thorpe (harness), Slump (harness) and Wilma Dillon (saddle) participated. Slump was not a match for his more experienced rivals, but he invariably battled out the distances set him in a fashion suggesting that he is fairly well forward in condition at present. Wilma 1 Dillon also demonstrated the fact that his speed has not departed from him since he last raced in public.

A very nice batch of yearlings arrived here recently from the Westmere Stud, Wanganui, to be educated for Mr W. T. Hazlett and ranking as descendants of three of the local breeder’s best mares. The youngsters were all sired by the imported English horse, Chief Ruler, whose progeny have been racing well during the current season. Sprig of Erin (imp.) is represented by a colt, Simper’s contribution to the draft is a filly, and Illume’s youngster is a colt who has to be recognized as a half-brother to the swift pony, Flicker, by Paper Money, who is reported to be undergoing a spell in Sydney. An addition is to be made to this batch of young thoroughbreds in the near future when a colt by the English horse, Arausio, from Gold Light, will be sent down from Hawkes Bay to Invercargill. This colt’s future will create interest, as he is the first foal of a mare who proved herself to be one of the best racehorses in the land in her day, while Arausio’s stock are new to the Maoriland turf. It is interesting to learn that Gold Light (Hymettus—Simper) has a second son to Arausio who will presently have to be described as a yearling. Simper, Sprig of Erin, Illume and Razzle Dazzle are all to be mated with Chief Ruler during the approaching season. It is a long time since Mr Hazlett has possessed so many colts at one time, as his good mares have given him many fillies of late years.

Local light harness trainer, W. Wilson, has been keeping his half-sister pacing pupils, Miss Adonis and Erin’s Fortune, in steady work since they 1 last appeared in public and both mares promise to be in excellent shape when called upon to compete at the Forbury Park Trotting Club's Winter gathering.

Judging from his healthy look and wellmuscled frame, King Balboa came through his strenuous racing experiences at Riverton at Easter as a good horse should. In company with his elder full-sister, Queen Balboa, he is making light of the tasks set him by F. W. Ellis. Queen Balboa appeared to feel the effects of her racing in the holding going at the S.R.C. Autumn meeting, and looked somewhat jaded at Riverton, but she is now freshening up again and may presently return to her winning form of the early fall season. In addition to the relatives named, F. Ellis is putting Red Sea, Mananui and Nylotis through their facings with a view to engagements ahead. The Songbird gelding, Mananui, has taken kindly to the hurdling business and can now cross the full-sized obstacles in a proficient fashion for a green fencer. It is also noticeable that jumping exercise is agreeing with him, as he has been putting on some condition of late, and it will not cause surprise if he should grow into a powerful gelding and a horse well-suited to his new career. In the event of the Wyndhambred gelding developing in the right direction a patient owner will be rewarded, as Mr McKeever has suffered quite a number of disappointments without much compensation since he first unfurled his racing banner on southern courses.

Red Boa has prospered and furnished since he won his first race at. Riverton recently, and his stablemate, Attractive Lady, has recovered from the effects of her exertions at the S.R.C. and Riverton meetings of late. R. McKay is keeping the pair referred to in steady work and they will probably be got ready to compete at Wingatui in June.

The three-year-old filly, Remindful, who has been nominated for the Oamaru J.C’s. Winter fixture, is growing into a more attractive juvenile than ever and, if looks go for anything, the daughter of Balboa —Reminder should win a race for her trainer F. Muir prior to the close of the present season. NEW ZEALAND HORSES SOLD. CATKIN TO MELBOURNE SPORTSMAN. (United Press Assn. —By Telegraph—Copyright.) Sydney, April 19. The New Zealand horse, Catkin, has been sold to a Melbourne sportsman and Will in future be trained there by Mr H. Grabell. Another New Zealander, Boston, changing hands for 440 guineas.—Australian Press Association. BOXING. WORLD’S FLYWEIGHT TITLE. (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Paris, April 18. In a bout for the world’s flyweight championship Frankie Genaro defeated the holder, Emil Plander, who was disqualified in the fifth round for hitting low.—Australian Press Association —-United Service.

From a bad position at the barrier Big Bertha a good favourite, was bustled along in the early stages of the Portland Hack yesterday at Whangarei and consequently when it came to a rare fighting finish she had little steam left to meet opposition challengers. She finished fourth, only a length behind the winner. With a little in her favour to-morrow Big Bertha should show that yesterday’s placed • horses might have had the breeze with them.

Schorr won the Waipu Handicap eo well yesterday that, he looks like being very hard to beat again to-morrow. Perhaps most opposition may come from Ti Tree and Oawairaka. The former paved the way for her stablemate Le Choucas in the main event on the first day for she went fast and carted the field along. Ti Tree it was that really beat Wenday for she later went with her rider apparently overlooking the fact that the pacemaker’s task was merely to crack the field up. How well she executed her task can be judged by the result.

Roman Pearl was unlucky in the Whangarei Trial yesterday. The Romeo filly was badly placed at the barrier and to finish.second to a good one such as Camp Prince proved to be (he won this race very easily) was an impressive performance. Roman Pearl may improve to-morrow. One of the best treated horses in the handicaps of late is Le Choucas. In his latest outings he has been on the 7 —3 mark in second rate handicap company. In the Mclnnes Memorial yesterday the Magpie gelding put up 61b overweight and came with a splendid finishing burst to score going away despite this. Le Choucas has only been raised 71b in the big event to-morrow so that it would be quite in order if he won again. After being made a good deal of use of in the handicap at Whangarei yesterday, more patiently handled Wenday might have been the victor. It was surprising to find her the outsider of the field of five (which included a bracket) and had luck been with her she might have given her supporters a royal return. Wenday is fast approaching her best so that she can be expected any day now. What happened to Thursby at the start of the Mclnnes Memorial yesterday? When the field came m sight from behind the small hill where the barrier was situated Thursby was tailed off so it was apparent that he had lost a lot of ground. He finished third, a neck and a head behind the winner so it looked as if he would have won with an even getaway. His showing to-morrow will indicate perhaps just what chance he had. It was an extraordinary performance. Good jockey 11. Goldfinch did not show to advantage in the six furlong Maugatapere Handicap at Whangarei yesterday. The Australian Sun gelding left the barrier smartly but he was eased until he was conceding a big start to the leaders. Brilliant Light was galloping over everything in the straight to finish in second place but it looked as if he was a good thing beaten.

The Rugby football season opens in Invercargill to-day with the first round of games in the S.R.F.U.’s various grade competitions. There are six teams in the Galbraith Shield competition for senior players and these have been drawn one against the other to play on Rugby Park. Football enthusiasts will now be provided with three games weekly on the Park as against two in former years. On the No. 1 area Southern and Blues have been drawn to play at 1.30 p.m., and Star and Pirates No. 2 will play at 3.15 p.m. Waikiwi and Pirates No. 1 will try conclusions on the No. 2 area, commencing at 2.45 p.m. Much interest is being manifested in the opening games and a big crowd is anticipated. The addition of two new teams (Waikiwi and Pirates No. 2) to the senior, competition will give a number of new and youthful players a chance to show their paces. All have been training hard during the past few weeks so fast, if not correct, football should be the order of the day.

Waikiwi, last year’s junior champions, are being given a solid test in being asked to meet the Pirates No. 1 team in their first game. There are few changes to report in the Blacks’ side and as they possessed a heavy pack and a speedy set of backs last season Waikiwi’s task will not be easy. The Red and Blacks are an unknown quantity, but it is reported that they will field a fairly hefty team for a promoted junior side, capable of springing a surprise on any of the other teams. Their progress will be keenly watched, and if fitness and keenness count for anything they should make matters very interesting this afternoon for their redoubtable opponents. Mr W. Stott will referee the game.

Pirates No. 2 and Star have been drawn as the “big” attraction. Last year’s pre(Star) will field much the same side as they had last season, with perhaps an alteration or two in the pack. This means that they will field a first-class side capable of holding its own in the championship contest. The Pirates side is a combination in the main of promoted junior backs and experienced forwards. The pack will be a solid one and should be able to get plenty of ball for their youthful backs. What they will do with it remains to be seen. Mr D. Leckie will referee this game.

The third game is that between the lightweights, Blues and Southern. There is not a 12 stone man in the Southern team, but as it is stated that they will make up in pace what they lack in -weight, it will be interesting to watch their efforts against the Blues, who also possess many light, but fast men. The Blues’ pack is solid if not heavy, and as they have a set of speed kings in the rearguard this game should be of the fast and open order. It certainly should provide good fare to the early followers of Rugby who like to see fast football. Mr J. Oughton will referee the game. TEAMS FOR TO-DAY. A number of clubs were unable to forward the lists of teams for to-day’s matches in times for publication in yesterday’s issue of the Southland Times.
