EXCURSION FARES

TRAVELLING ON THE RAILWAY’S.

REQUEST TO MINISTER

(Per United Press Association.) Dunedin, April 19. A deputation approached the Hon. W. B. Taverner with a request that persons who from public employment (such as firemen, tramway men, etc.) were prevented from taking advantage of the railway excursion rates at Easter and Christmas, should have such a privilege afforded at other times.

The Minister said that the request w-as not a new one and had been made previously by the Post and Telegraph employees (involving some 10,000 men) and dairymen. If anything comprehensive were done it would mean making excursion fares available throughout the year which was a big problem. There were no regulations under which one section of the community as apart from other sections could be granted concessions. He would look into the question whether it was possible to approach the matter from the point of view of employees of local bodies, for he realized that many had to take their holidays in the winter months when cheap fares were not available.
