PRINCE OF WALES

INTEREST IN MINERS

GENEROUS APPRECIATION VOICED “A MARVELLOUS THING” (United Press Assn.-By Telegraph-Copyright.) (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) London, April 18. The Prince of Wales, and Mr. A. J. Cook, the British miners’ leader, stood chatting in a very lively fashion after a luncheon at the Mansion House at which the Prince of Wales personally thanked the workers for their contributions to the coalfields distress fund. . . The Prince of Wales said: 'I wish to thank from the bottom of my heart the subscribers, small and large, not only in England, but in the dominions and America, one might almost say throughout the world. The response was remarkable, but we are not yet out of the wood; much remains. I know we can rely with confidence on the continuous, valuable assistance of all.” Mr. Cook said: ‘We owe the Prince the greatest, measure of thanks for his wholehearted enthusiasm. He brought the Throne quite close to the populace. It is thanks to the Prince that I am able to come here without contaminating anyone of you. His conduct and attitude have shown that all mankind have the great qualities in common. You, Sir,” said Mr. Cook speaking directly across the table to the Prince, “have clone a marvellous tiling. Never was I so impressed as by your speech on Christmas night. I was with two Communist friends when your name was announced. They undoubtedly scoffed, but when you had finished there were tears in their eyes. They put their hands in their pockets and gave what they had.”—Australian Press Association.
