GAMING CHARGES

SEVEN MEN ARRESTED.

THREE PREMISES RAIDED.

Auckland, April 18

Just before the time the first race was due to start at Whangarei this morning, two detectives assisted by a number of uniformed police raided three premises in the city, gathering in no fewer than seven men on charges under the Gaming Act. Shortly after 11 o'clock Robert Francis Bennett and Frederick James Dryland were arrested in Swanson street on charges of keeping a common gaming house and assisting in the management respectively. Raymond Lewis was arrested on a charge of using the premises o? his Majesty’s Arcade as a common gaming house, while Francis Brewer was taken into custody on a charge of using premises in Vulcan Lane for the same purpose. Austin McCormick was arrested on a charge of assisting in the management of a common gaming house, while two other men were taken in for being found on the premises. At noon all the men arrested were brought before a Justice of the Peace at the police station and remanded on bail to appear at the Police Court to-morrow morning.
