ELECTION

SIXTEEN CANDIDATES FOR

COUNCIL

At noon yesterday the nominations of candidates for the mayoralty of Invercargill, for the Invercargill Borough Council for other local bodies closed. There was a gathering of some twenty ratepayers in the Council Chambers when the Returning Officer (Mr C. L. Grange) read out the nominations. When he had concluded the candidates for the Mayoralty and a number of candidates for the council spoke briefly.

The Mayor (Mr John Miller) said that there was no necessity on the present occasion to say much. Later he would have an opportunity of placing his views before electors. He thanked those gentlemen who had nominated him. His apprenticeship in civic affairs was long past and his record was known to the electors of Invercargill. Mr J. D. Campbell, the other candidate for the Mayoralty, also spoke briefly. “I, like his Worship, do not think this is the time to make a speech, ” he said. “Doubtless I shall have an opportunity of speaking at a future date. I wish to thank those who were kind enough to nominate me for the very responsible office of Mayor. I hope the election will be contested in a friendly spirit and I should like to feel that whatever may be the result his Worship and I will be as good friends as we have been during my four years as a councillor." Brief addresses were also, made by Councillors Tattersfield, Robertson, O’Byrne and Reed and Mr Isaac Petrie. The Nominations. Two nominations were received for the office of Mayor, sixteen for the twelve seats on the Council, five for the three seats on the Southland Hospital Board, four for the three seats on the Bluff Harbour Board and two for the two seats on the Southland Power Board. The contest for the mayoralty promises to be interesting. For the council there are elections in all the wards with the exception of the west, and one prospective candidate for that ward arrived two minutes late with his nomination paper. Mr A. H. Aitken has been returned unopposed to the Bluff Harbour Board. The sitting member, Mr A. A. Mac Gibbon, is being opposed for the seat on the Southland Electric Power Board by Messrs Lange and Bennet. Mr T. Rhodes, the sitting member, is being opposed by Mr A. T. Newman for the seat on the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. With such a wealth of candidates a heavy poll is anticipated, as all the nominees are organizing strongly, many names having been added to the supplementary roll.

There will be an election for the office of Mayor but for councillors only eight nominations have been received for the nine seats so that an extraordinary vacancy occurs for which nominations will be called later and an election held if necessary. Of the present council those not seeking re-election are Councillors J. Walker and L. McKclvie ard the new blood on the council are Messrs. J. G. Sutherland and G. R. Beaumont, the former having previously served a term on the council. TIMARU. (Per United Press Association.) Timaru, April IS. There are three nominations for the Timaru mayoralty, Messrs William Angland, A. Lawrence Gee, and P. C. Vinnell. For the council there are eleven nominations for nine seats. CHRISTCHURCH. Christchurch, April IS. The nominations for the city mayoralty are the Rev. J. K. Archer (Labour) the sitting Mayor, and Mr W. Haywood (Citizens’ Association). There are 32 candidates for the 16 council seats including 14 Citizens’ Association candidates, four of them sitting members, 12 Labour candidates. nine of whom are sitting members, and six Independents. For the hospital board there are 17 candidates for eight seats and for the harbour board nine candidates for four city seats. The election is to be on the proportional system. WANGANUI. Wanganui, April IS. A keen interest is being taken in the local municipal elections. There are three candidates for the mayoralty, Messrs W. J. Rogers (the present Mayor), Hope Gibbons and M. Morrison. There are 23 nominated for the council. NAPIER. Napier, April 18. Mr J. Vigor Brown was returned unopposed to the Napier mayoralty. OTAKI. Otaki, April 18. The following councillors have been elected unopposed for the borough:—Messrs T. O’Rourke, W. B. Smith. E. S. Morse, H. Cockrell, J. McGill and H. Palmer. For the mayoralty there are two nominations, Messrs C. F. Atmore and W. H. Bowden.

Mr E. S. Morse was re-elected to the power board.
