STEWART ISLAND

NOTES FROM HALFMOON BAY.

(From Our Correspondent.)

There is a marked diminution in the number of visitors to Stewart Island now, and the residents of Halfmoon Bay will soon be settling down to the winter routine. Boardinghouse-keepers are able to report an abundance of accommodation.

The fishing fleet has been active of late, though not to such an extent as has been the case in previous years, and good catches are being made. Presentation. At the close of the evening service in the Oban Presbyterian Church on Sunday last a presentation was made to Mr D. Lee, who has helped in no small way toward the musical part of the services. The presentation took the form of a set of salad spoons as a token of appreciation from the members of the congregation. The Rev. R. C. Boyd, pastor of the parish, and Mr R. C. Hicks, church secretary, made reference to the many helpful services rendered by Mr Lee to which the recipient briefly replied. Basketball Club. The annual meeting of the Basketball Club was held on Monday evening last, when there was a large attendance, the Rev. R. C. Boyd presiding. The treasurer’s statement as presented by Miss R. Pollock, showing a good credit balance, was read and approved. The club resolved to commence practice this week and a successful season is anticipated. Mr G. D. Ashton has consented to act as coach and his experience should prove invaluable to club members. The election of officers resulted as follows: President,.the Rev. R. C. Boyd; vicepresidents, Mesdames Stirling, Bragg, and Heaton; secretary', Miss Johnstone; treasurer, Miss R. Pollock; social committee, Misses T. Topi, Walscott, and Scully. Church Sale. The annual sale of work of the Oban Presbyterian Church was held on Friday of last week in the Public Hall and proved a great success. The young people of the church with the assistance of some of the elders had been working for weeks ahead, with the result that the tables and stalls were. stocked with decorative and useful articles. Gifts from the mainland swelled the array of goods. Competitions were held during the evening and proved a great source of amusement. The sale was well patronized, visitors attending from all quarters. Quite a number came from as far as the whaling base at Price’s Bay. The receipts were something over £5O, which will help along considerably the schemes of the church locally and abroad.

The stallholders were as follows: Guild stalls, Misses E. and B. Harrison and Guild assistants; produce, Nurse Calder and Mrs C. Thomson; sweets and drinks, Miss D. Thomson; plain and fancy, Mesdames Gregg and Milcher; tearooms, Mesdames Stirling (convenor), Boyd, Misses Methven and Hamilton and assistants. Competitions, Messrs Hicks, Lee, Carter, Jensen, Leask, Ashton, Stirling, Evans and Mrs Hanning.
