GORE RAM FAIR

LARGE ENTRY FORWARD.

EXCELLENT SALE RESULTS.

The Gore A. and P. Association held its annual ram fair on the showgrounds yesiviua.v, when there was a large attendance of farmers from all parts of the province. The entry, while not quite up to last year when a record was established, was nevertheless a very large one and the quality taken all through was excellent. The arrangements made in connection with the fair were very complete and the association and its officials have to be congratulated upon the expeditious manner in which the sales were effected. The sale, particularly for stud rams was an exceptionally good one, the prices showing an advance on last year’s figures. There was a comparatively small entry in the stud section, and the sale for these opened quietly, the first two or- three pens being passed. The top price was obtained by Dalgety and Co., Ltd., for an excellent type of Romney, bred by Mr W. G. Ladbrook, Gore. This was purchased by Mr Wedge, Glenure Station, at 34gns. Mr Oliver Grey, Milburn, also had several good rams forward, and these ranged in price from 134 to 16gns. Apart from the popular Romney Marsh breed there was only one Southdown in the stud section. This was entered by Mr W. A. Baxter, Pomahaka, and realized Sgns. The sale of flock rams also opened somewhat dully, but as the sale progressed competition became very keen and the general average of prices was extremely satisfactory. One of the outstanding features of the offering was the excellent quality of the rams sold on account of Mr Alan Galt, Tuturau. These were brought forward in excellent condition, showing plenty of bloom and were dense in the fleece. The top price obtained by him was 22jgns for three 1-shear rams, sold by Dalgety and Co., Ltd., and purchased by Mr J. C. Nichol, Riversdale. Another fine type of ram offered on his behalf by the Southland Farmers’ Co-operative Association, Ltd., realized 20$gns, and was purchased by Mr A. Gow, Waikoikoi. His average price was a particularly good one. Mr W. J. Ladbrook also had some typical rams forward in the flock section and these were keenly sought after, prices ranging from 10 to 141gns, the latter price being paid by Mr W. Mclntosh, Wallacetown, for two twoshear rams of excellent quality. Mr W. L. Scott, Mataura, also had a fairly large entry forward, and all his entries were cleared at prices ranging- from 9 to 13gnsi Mr J. H. Galt, Tuturau, had a small entry, but all of his lots met with keen competition, and a good sale. The entry in all other breeds was extremely limited, and while most of the lots were cleared, their sale did not arouse the same interest as that taken in the Romney Marsh and none of the prices were outstanding. In the sale of unregistered flock rams, the top price of lOJgns was secured by the Southland Farmers’ Co-operative Association, Ltd.; on account of Mr J. L. Keir, Charlton. A pen of four were purchased at this figure by Mr J. McMillan, Hope Hill. The same vendor sold rams at 7gns, 7:}gns, 7Jgns, Bgns and up to lOgns during the sale. Mr C. R. Keir, of Charlton, also secured high prices for his offering, his sales ranging from sJgns to BJgns. Sales were as follows:— STUD RAMS. Romney Marsh. ■Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd.: Ac-
