OTAUTAU NOTES.

Mise Winton spent the week-end with Mr and Mrs L. Harrington, Ermedale. Mr and Mrs Rowan returned from Riverton on Monday. A number of friends assembled at the residence of Mrs W. G. Coulter on Monday evening to bid farewell to Mr D. Melrose. Gramophone selections were enjoyed, while songs were rendered by Messrs E. Mclvor, S. Harrington, A. Coulter, W. Coulter, J. Arthur and F. Anderson and recitations by Messrs F. Milburn and R. Cameron. At a suitable interval Mr W. Coulter, on behalf of those present, asked the guest to accept a tobacco pouch as a slight token of the esteem in which he was held by them and wished him the best of luck and every success at Oxford. The following also spoke in eulogistic terms of Mr Melrose’s good qualities; Messrs F. Anderson, A. Coulter, E. Mclvor and R. S. Harrington. In reply the recipient said he was sorry to sever his connection with old friends in Otautau, but he hoped to renew acquaintance with them at a later date. “For he’s a jolly good fellow” was heartily sung. A splendid supper, provided by Mrs Coulter, was handed round by the ladies. Mr T. Milburn thanked Mrs Coulter for placing residence at their disposal for the function, and called for cheers for Mr and Mrs Coulter. Amongst those present were: Air and Mrs M Coulter, Mr and Mrs W. G Coulter, Mr and Mrs F. Anderson, Mr and Mrs Collings, Mias McKerchar, Messrs A. Coulter, Mclvor, R. S. Harrington, Millburn, G. D. Stewart, Butler, Cameron, J. Arthur, D. Melrose, and D. Murray. Mrs Renowden has been the guest of Mr and Mrs A. Ferguson, Oteramika. Mrs Clark entertained a number of friends in lhe supper room of the hall last week, the occasion being the celebration of her son’s (Thomas) twenty-first birthday. A very pleasant time was spent in dancing to music supplied by Misses Renowden and Fraser, Messrs Jellyman and F. Anderson. A dainty supper was partaken of, after which Mr H. Norman, who acted as Master of Ceremonies, congratulated Mr Clark on attaining his majority, and trusted he would prosper and enjoy many happy years. “For he’s a jolly good fellow” was sung after which Mr Clark thanked everyone for the many gifts received, and for their presence that evening. A pleasant function was brought to a close with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” Those present were:’Mr and Mrs F. E. Anderson, Mr and Mrs W. G. Coulter, Mr and Mrs Wilson (South Hillend). Mesdames Clark and Collings, Misses McFetrick (2), Harrington, Duncan, Renowden (2), Brown and Fraser, Messrs J. and F. Plunkett (South Hillend), McFetrick (2, Kauana), Herbison, Clapp, Wakeling, Mclvor (2), Ritchie, Norman, Arthur, McDougall, and Walker. Miss Rawlinson was the guest of Mr and Mrs J. Fairweather, Scotts Gap during the week.

Mr and Mrs John McCall, Dunedin were the guests of Mr and Mrs 11. D. Collie, Bayswater.

Dr and Mrs Reekie spent a few days at Lakes Te Anau and Manapouri last week. Miss Findlay was the guest of Mrs and Miss Macdonald recently. “Stretton” was the scene of a happy function on Friday evening last when a large number assembled to tender a welcome home to Mr and Mrs G. E. Fisher. Dancing was indulged in to music provided by Mr Jellyman, while a number also enjoyed a game of cards. A solo rendered by Mrs Liddell was appreciated. After supper had been partaken of, Mr A. Liddell, on behalf of the assembled company, expressed the good wishes of everyone for the young couple, and hoped they would enjoy manyhappy years. Mr Eric Fisher, in replying, thanked them for the hearty welcome which they had been accorded. Amongst those present were: Mr and Mrs G. E. Fisher, Mr and Mrs W. Smellie, Mr and Mrs J. Thomson, Mr and Mrs A. Beange, Mr and Mrs F. J. Collie, Mr and Mrs Sadlier, Mr and Mrs Liddell, Mesdames Duncan, and H. Beange, Misses Smellie (2), Mills, Lumsden, Winton, Duncan Stevens, Macdonald, Walker, Laing (2), Low and McKenzie, Messrs Mills, Collie (2), Browning, Maxwell (2), Thomson (2), Laing, McDonald, Stroud, James (3), McDougall, Low (3), McKenzie, Smellie (4), and John Fisher. The following ladies were amongst those present at the closing of the croquet green on Wednesday: Mesdames Booth, Reekie, Smith, Timpany, Chandler, O’Brien, McDougall, Smyth, Saxelby, Buchanan, Sinclair, McMillan, Hall, Blaikje, Keith, Walker, Lumsden, Porteous, Bradshaw and Wesney, Misses Shaw Donnan, D. O’Brien, Burke, Hay, Duncan, Gould, Hardy, Scatter (2), Campbell (2), and Robertson. Mrs J. McDougall, Gore, was the guest of Mr and Mrs 11. Smyth during the week. Mrs S. Ward, Aparima, spent a few- days with Mr and Mrs Angus.

WINTON NOTES

Miss J. Hogg is visiting Dunedin. Mrs F. Hogarth and her small son have returned from Colac Bay. Mrs R. O’Brien and Mrs J. Blackmun have returned from Athol, where they were the guests of Mrs Soper. Mr and Mrs J. Brown spent the week-end at Bluff, as the guests of Mrs J. Kirkland. Mrs Lorrimer, Invercargill, spent the week-end with Mrs J. A. Wilson.

Miss M. Blackmun, Dunedin, was home for the Easter vacation.

Nurse W. M. Liddell, Southland Hospital, is the guest of her mother, Mrs H. Liddell. Mrs C. Davis Is spending a holiday at Levin.

Miss C. Double and Mr M. Walker, Dunedin, have been visiting Mrs J. A. Wikon. Mrs P. Batchelor, Kurow, Is visiting relatives in the district.

Miss Margaret King and her guest, Miss E. Price, of Christchurch, returned from Queenstown on Tuesday. Miss Thora Egerton, Colac Bay, has been spending a few days with her sister, Mrs F. Hogarth. Mr and Mrs T. Miller (Jnr.) returned from their wedding tour yesterday. Mrs R. O’Brien returned to Clinton on Tuesday. Miss Campbell, Dunedin, has been staying with her sister, Mrs G. A. Pearce, Gap Road.

Mrs Rodgers, Owaka, and Messrs W. Clark and J. Smith, Dunedin, have been the guests of Mrs R. King, “The Bend.” Mesdames Driscoll and McKenzie, who have been the guests of Mrs McKay, returned to Dunedin on Monday. Mrs J. Wilson, Hokonui, is staying with Mrs C. A. McDonald, Dipton. Miss M. Wikon (Hokonui), and J. Baxter were at Queenstown at Easter. Mr and Mrs D. Young have returned from their honeymoon. Mr and Mrs R. McLean, Dipton, visited Riverton for the Easter holidays. Mr and Mrs R. J. Cochrane motored to Drummond.

Mesdames F. Gerrard and D. Stewart and Miss N. Fraser, Dipton, were in Winton last week.

Mrs S. Smith is visiting Orepuki, where she is the guest of Mrs G. W. Popenhagen. Miss M. Geary has gone to Riverton for a few weeks.

Mr and Mrs R. Balch, Jnr., and family, are spending the week-end at Tokonui. Misses N. and C. Connelly, Invercargill, spent the week-end with Miss Maimie Driscoll. Miss A. Connelly, of Temuka, is her guest. Mr and Mrs J. Walsh, Mr L. Walsh, Gore, and Mrs A. J. Thomson, Dunedin, motored to Christchurch at Easter.

Little Mavis Brumby celebrated her ninth birthday on Wednesday afternoon when her small guests, Joyce Butler, Dora McDermott, Heather Clark, Daphne Brumby and Stewart Earl, spent a merry time in games. In the final for the ladies’ championship singles played on the tennis court on Saturday, Miss Humphries defeated Miss M. Watson.

A match between Winton and Drummond hockey teams played at Drummond, on Wednesday afternoon, resulted in a win for the visitors who were entertained at

afternoon tea at the conclusion of the game. Mrs D. Walker, Palmerston, who has been staying with her daughter, Mrs A. Nicolson, left for Drummond on Wednesday. A large sum was raised for home missions at the Harvest Festival sale of produce held in the Sunday School Hall on Monday. Members of the Winton and Lochiel Presbyterian Missionary Union and Bible. Class girls were in charge of the stalls. In the evening a short concert programme was presented to a large and appreciative audience. Songs were contributed by Mesrames D. Russell and Smart, Messrs j. A. Wilson G. Lindsay and D. Russell, a vocal quartette by Mesdames J. B. Cowie, J. A. Wilson, Messrs G. Lindsay and F. Tilley, recitations by Mrs Smart, and a dialogue by members of the Bible Class. The Rev. H. Hogg occupied the chair and Miss Gilmour played the accompaniments. The remainder of the produce was afterwards auctioned by Mr J. G. Manson. A good floor, excellent music and a dainty supper contributed to the enjoyment of all who attended the hockey club dance held in the Radio Theatre on Tuesdayevening. The music was supplied by Mrs McArthur (piano), Messrs McWilliams (violin), and E. Souness (cornet), while extras were played by Misses I. Bourke, M. Balch, Messrs Tomlin (piano), and G. Mrs H. Hogg was in the chair and Mrs J. A. Broom presided at the organ. Mrs D. Wildev reported that the recent harvest sale had resulted in £37 10/-, which was considered very satisfactory. A vote of thanks was passed to Messrs J. Manson and D. Wildey for their help at the Dutch auction in the evening. Mrs T. A. McWilliam read a letter describing the work of the home missionary in a saw-milling and mining district. This being Home Mission day- Mrs J. B. Wilson followed with an article written by one of the missionaries working amongst the fruit-growers of Nelson. Sister Betty spoke of some her experiences while engaged in mission work on the West Coast. A motion was passed expressing sympathy with Mrs Hogg in the death of her mother.

BIVERTON GOSSIP

Mrs R. Rupples, Otautau, has been visiting Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Willett, South Riverton. Mr. and Mrs. Burnley, who have been the guests of Mr. and Mrs. L. R. Jordan, have returned to Oamaru. Mr. and Mrs. McKenzie, Gladstone, are holidaying at the seaside. Miss Galloway Is visiting friends at Dunedin.

Mrs J. Armstead, Auckland, is looking up old friends and acquaintances. Mrs. A. Dobbie, Auckland, is visiting her people, Dr. N. G. and Mrs. Trotter. Mr. and Mrs. J. Neilson have returned to Dunedin, after a pleasant holiday at the seaside.

Mr. and Mrs. W. McKay are holidaying in Dunedin and Timaru.

Mrs. and Miss White, Christchurch, are visiting friends at the seaside. Misses M. and L. Dickens, Invercargill, who have been the guests of Mr. and Mrs. F. Trail, The Highlands, have returned home.

Misses Jenkins, Dunedin, are visiting friends at the seaside. Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Taylor, who have resided in South Riverton for some time, left on Monday for Invercargill, where they will in future reside. On Tuesday afternoon a number of tennis players met at Messrs. Hunter and McKenzies office for the purpose of making a farewell presentation to Mrs. E. Griffiths, who shortly leaves for Waikouaiti. Mr. J. A. C. Mackenzie, the president of the club, in asking Mrs. Griffiths’s acceptance of a brass fruit bowl, said the club members were sorry to lose the services of such a live member, and hoped that she would like her new’ home. Mrs. Griffiths suitably replied. Those present were: Mesdames Helm, Pearce, P. Williams, Misses Gee, Tweedie, Gordon, Bcrndston, More, Green, Ashley, Messrs Mackenzie, Helm and Lockhart.
