OTAUTAU NOTES

WESTERN DISTRICT HOCKEY ASSOCIATION.

The annual meeting of the above was held on Monday evening, and was attended by delegates from Nightcaps, Otautau, Thornbury, Drummond and Ohai Clubs. In the unavoidable absence of the president, Mr Potter was voted to the chair, and Mr R. Cox was appointed acting-secretary. Mr T. A. Shearer (president) wrote stating that he was receiving medical attention and would be unable to hold office this year. In forwarding a donation of £l, he wished the association a successful year. It was resolved that a letter of appreciation of the services rendered by him to the association, and that he be thanked for his donation, accompanied with best wishes for a speedy return to health be sent to him.

In tendering her resignation as secretary, owing to her removal to Millerton, Miss Lock wished the association every success.

Complimentary reference was made to the admirable services rendered by her, and it was resolved that a minute of appreciation be recorded. It was also decided to vote her an honorarium of £5. The balance-sheet was read, showing receipts amounting to £53 3/11 and expenditure £37 17/4, leaving a credit balance of £l5 6/7.—Adopted. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mr G. H. Hodges; vice-presidents, Messrs T. A. Shearer (Drummond), T. Smith (Ohai), W. Urquhart (Thornbury), J. Currie (Nightcaps), J. C. Millar (Otautau) and A. Mitchell (Hollyburn) ; secretary and treasurer, Mr R. Cox; auditor, Mr A. C. Mills (re-elected) ; delegates to Southland Association, Dr. Stewart and Mr P. Gilfedder; selectors, Messrs Potter (Ohai), Currie (Nightcaps) and Hodges (Otautau).

The following were nominated as referees: Thornbury, Mr Logie; Nightcaps, Messrs Currie, Burgess and Jamieson; Ohai, Messrs Buchanan, Potter and T. Smith; Otautau, Messrs Iggo, Cox and Hodges. In order that a record may be kept of the amounts forwarded to the Southland Association, it was resolved that secretaries of the various clubs furnish a statement of the amounts collected in future to the secretary of the Western District Association, and that they appear in the balancesheet.

It was resolved that the competitions commence on Wednesday, April 10, the president and secretary to draw up the fixtures.

It. was decided that Heddon Bush be affiliated.

It was resolved that the secretaries of the various clubs be asked to forward a fist of registered players to the association, that a list of such players be handed to the referee by the captain with a statement that the players were registered, the list to be then sent by the referee to the association. It was also decided that wherever possible two referees officiate at matches, each team to have the right to nominate a referee. It was resolved that it be a recommendation to the various clubs to forward items of interest for publicity purposes. The secretary was instructed to write to the Southland Association requesting that a balance-sheet of the “K” Cup tour be forwarded.

A motion was carried that delegates to the Southland Association be directed to support the appointment of three, selectors for the choosing of the representative team, one each from the Southern, Western and Southland Associations. River Board.

The monthly meeting of the River Board was attended by Messrs John Smith (chairman). J. D. Clouston, J. G. Paterson, J. G. Flett, John Muir and J. H. Smith, while- an apology was received from Mr P. G. Dahlenburg. The Under-Secretary of Internal Affairs wrote stating that with the alteration of the district the department proposed to have an election of all the subdivisions. Messrs J. D. Clouston and J. G. Paterson tendered their resignations as members of the board. These were accepted, and it was resolved to record a minute of appreciation of their services. In view of these resignations the clerk was instructed to ask the Department of Internal Affairs to confine the election to the Bayswater subdivision, for which two members will be required. It was left in the hands of Messrs John Smith and Muir to obtain the timber for Farrelly’s bridge, and to make arrangements with the dredge-master to do the work. The same gentlemen were authorized to make an inspection of the Aparima River near the whey discharge from the factory, and submit a report to next meeting if any protective work was required. General. Messrs Wilson Bros., Invercargill, who were the successful tenderers for the reerection of the Otautau Hotel, have arrived in the township, and expect to make a start within the next few days. The dredging on the Otautau River has been carried beyond the boundary of the township, and the dredge is now in No. 2 subdivision. Mr A. Guise, who has the contract of dredging the Waimatuku stream, is approaching the Otautau-Drummond road. He expects to finish up some time in April, his contract extending for less than half a mile on the western side of the road named.
