CHANGE OF OIL.
GIVES NEW LIFE TO THE ENGINE. One of the most interesting things about lhe latest types of engines is that, in spite of their remarkable efficiency and the high speed at which they do their work, their oil consumption is, at any rate for the first year of their lives, extraordinarily low. That in itself may be a trap- for the inexperienced owner-driver. Day after day he sees the oil gauge standing at the same point on the scale, and if he thinks anything about it at all he congratulates him self on having an economical engine. He does not realize that, although the oil may Be consumed very slowly it is apt to deteriorate very quickly in these modern engines, and the moment this deterioration sets in the engine will begin to fall off in ; performances. Continue this to the limit ; and damage is certain to follow. A good brand of engine oil only costs a ] few shillings, and yet many people teem to 1
regard the changing of the oil in the base chamber oftener than once every 2000 miles as a piece of riotous extravagance. Let these once try the effect of changing that oil three times as often and they will be astonished. Their engines will seem to take on an entirely new lease of life, and run in quite a different manner. Furthermore, those extra oil bills will buy greatly increased life and far longer freedom from mechanical trouble. In a lesser degree the same thing applies to the gear-box and back axle, units which are often disgracefully neglected and left for dangerously long with either not enough lubricant or with a mess of stuff which was once oil and is now worse than useless.
