SPORTING

NOTES BY SIR MODRED. Nominations for the Wairio Jockey Club’s Annual gathering on January 12 close on Friday next. The Auckland Cup and Great Northern Foal Stakes will be decided on Wednesday (Boxing Day.) The Auckland Trotting Club’s leading event of the season, Auckland Trotting Cup, is due on Thursday next. Acceptances for the Waikouaiti Racing Club’s Annual fixture on New I ear’s Day, close on Monday evening (December 24.) The Gore Trotting Club’s Annual fixture on Boxing Day is creating very warm interest in local light harness circles. The champion Invercargill-owned pony. Flicker (Paper Money—lllume) was returned a winner in Sydney this week. The Dunedin Jockey Club’e Summer meeting will open on Wednesday (Boxing Day) and continue over Thursday (December 29.) 0. E. Hooper, who takes Queen’s Own to Auckland, had charge of the ex-Soutfa-lander prior to the mare entering F. G. Holmes’ stable. Local trainer, F. W. Ellis, will leave for Wingatui with his D.J.C. meeting representatives on Monday or Tuesday. Invercargill trainer F. J. McKay will probably produce Taramoa and Slanther at the Cattle Flat meeting on Thursday. The Southland-owned pacers, Firelight and King Pointer, may race well at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting next week. The handicaps for the first day of the Southland Racing Club's Summer meeting on January 2 and 3 are due on Friday next (December 28.) The locally-owned black yearling brother to Remindful, by Balboa—Reminder, has had the name of Black Boa conferred upon him. When Coomassie’s younger full sister, now spelling, is stripped for racing purposes she will be identified by the name of Some Maid. Jolly Money, who won a double at the recent Takapuna meeting, will race in the Railway Handicap at Ellerslie with H. W’iggins as his rider. Royal Flower, the three-year-old filly who accompanied Gold Tinge to Auckland, is a sister to Ark Royal, last season’s Dunedin Guineas winner. The Australian J.C.’s Summer meeting opens at Randwick to-day and continues over December*26, when the Summer Cup (Im. and 5f.) will be run. When G. Young won on Gladioli at the Warwick Farm meeting in Sydney recently, the filly was second fancy and won well in experienced hands. It is reported that the Australian-bred filly, Miss Joycie, who was recently returned to her owner to be spelled at Winton, has been injured in a paddock accident.

Chang, by Day Comet —Lady Frisco, who ranks as a full brother to White Comet, is a promising two-year-old colt under the care of A. Tinker, at Te Rapa. The brilliant Paganelli, who will carry 9.3 in the Railway Handicap at Ellerslie on Wednesday next, is reported to be in great heart for the stern task now before him. The Waikato-trained hurdling novice, Berinthia, by Mountain Knight—Civilisation, may be found racing well over the sticks at New Plymouth and Stratford shortly. The old number-board on the Southland R.C.’s course, which has seen its best days, has been discarded, and will be replaced at the forthcoming local Summer fixture. Inquiries made during the past week strengthen the impression that numerically strong fields will compete in the two-year-old events at the Southland R.C. Summer races. Seven G.N. Derby candidates, viz., Cashier, Kinross, Moorgas. Tcheka, Briar Root, Gold Money and Aggressive, are engaged in Queen’s Plate (one mile) run at Ellerslie on Wednesday next. As great interest will be taken in the running of the PJccarton-trained Red Heckle at the Auckland R.C. meeting, it is worthy of note that he is engagecj in the Christmas Handicap (Im.) on Wednesday. Despite the fact that some very clever hurdle racers are to be found invariably racing at Ellerslie, South Islanders will give Wliarncliffe (10.12) a chance in Grafton Hurdles at the A.R.C.’s meeting. Six galloping fixturee and four light harness meetings in New Zealand will come up for consideration on Boxing Day, southern racegoers being mostly interested in proceedings at Gore (trotting) and Wing atui (galloping). The withdrawals from the Wyndham Cup comprise Set Sail, Black Duke, Circulation, King Balboa, Lucy Locket. Kilmoyler. Cupid’s Dart, Apache and Panorama, leaving a well-balanced field of twelve to contest the southern New Year’s Day attraction. With Gay Sonnet, Father O’Flynn, and Camisader eliminated from the list, the very satisfactory field of nine remains in the President’s Handicap at Wyndham, thus ensuring an open sprinting field seldom met with at similar southern fixtures. As was generally expected in well-inform-ed circles, Listening Post was one of the non-acceptors for the New Year Hurdles at Wyndham, but the very useful field of seven remains and this should lead to a very interesting race to open the W.J.C.’s programme. Auckland reports are to the effect that Hoylake remains at the head of the quotations for the Auckland Cup, with Oratrix next in demand, while Aussie is most in favour for the Railway Handicap, with the W’aikato representative, Paganelli, a strong second fancy. At Wingatui on Thursday morning (reports “Sentinel” in the 0.D.T.) Set Sail and Lucy Locket, after cantering a circuit, came over seven furlongs at a good working gallop. They travelled a bit leisurely over the first two furlongs in 30, and completed the distance in 1.42. The outside of the course proper was in use. In his final gallon at Riccarton on Thursday Sir Roy beat Battle Colours over six furlongs in Imin. 16 3-ssecs. Sir Roy was sore when he started but afterwards galloped freely. This reads like a promising effort for the Manawatu meeting, at which Sir Roy is due next week. As Star Raid is due to race at Dunedin next week it is instructive to note that he ran five furlongs with Night March at Riccarton on Thursday morning. Night March was slightly in front at the winning post in 12 4-5. As Star Raid was giving away weight the gallop ranks as a smart effort. When racing at the Ascot pony course in Sydney last week. Mr W. T. Hazlett’s three-ypar-old filly, Flicker, was beaten into third place in the 14.2 Handicap (sf. and 66yds) under 8.11 (top-weigth). heads separating the placed horses. On Wednesday of the current week at the Roseberry meeting at

Victoria Park she won easily in the race selected for her and returned a remunerative price. The daughter of Paper Money —lllume has proved herself a little racehorse of rare merit since she arrived in Sydney and has seldom, if ever, been out of a place. She is now being called upon to carry heavy weights in the ranks of the lilliputian racers, and it is on the cards that she will presently be called upon to face the music in opposition to horses on the leading galloping courses of the Sydney metropolitan area. When raced as a two-year-old in this country’ the grand-daughter of the noted brood mare, Simper, was twice second and twice third in nine starts with performers of her own age. In a big field at the Wellington R.C.’s Spring fixture she was beaten a length by Staghunter (claimed as the best youngster of the season) in the Roseneath Handicap, and again at the C.J.C. New Zealand Cup fixture she acted as runner-up to Staghunter in the Irwell Handicap, beaten by two lengths. These were both impressive performances -for a little one, as she had strong fields behind her on each occasion and the time was good. It will be interesting to see how the descendant of Paper Money shapes in “horse” company in Sydney if tried out in that division.

Writing in the Otago Times of Thursday morning's work “Sentinel” reports that Pink Note and Equerry broke away from the mile post on the outside of the course proper at Wingatui and came over the final seven furlongs in 1.37. Pink Note finished well and full of running, and it could be considered a good gallop for Equerry, who has improved considerably since joining J. Feilder’s stable. For the purpose of comparison with the gallop of Pink Note at Wingatui on Thursday it may be pointed out that under similar conditions on the S.R.C.’s track on Tuesday Queen Balboa and Sparkling Eyes ran seven furlongs in 1.35 2-5. On Thursday morning Queen Balboa and King Balboa ran the first seven furlongs of a mile in 1.37 3-5, and Apache beat Paris over the last seven furlongs of about a mile in about 1.34. When being landed in Invercargill from Nightcaps both Possum and the two-year-old filly, Some Glen, by Some Boy II Blind Eye, by Vice Admiral—Unawares, by Gipsy Grand—Ambush, by Vanguard— Fairy Maid, by Albany—Titania, got into trouble, with the result that both lost skin and hair. The youngster was sore when she made her debut on the local tracks, but galloped well on Thursday and was walking about fully the following morning. She is hardly likely to be seen at her best at the approaching S.R.C. fixture, but Some Glen promises to develop into a smart galloper with age and experience. In the meantime she greatly resembles Mantua at the same age, and is also like Silver Paper’s half-sister, Aspiring, but has not the same driving power behind and is lighter in colour. Possum, the other visitor from the coal country is a three-year-old son of Balboa—Castashore mare and a fine, big upstanding gelding at that, the ideal cut of a horse to furnish into a fencer at four and five years of age. At the same time Possum can gallop speedily and resolutely and may develop into a juvenile in winning form during the autumn season. The big gelding lost some skin in the mishap referred to, but failed to be troubled thereby and has been moving freely in his work here. The novices mentioned are here under the care of the owner’s son, R. Dockerty, who has had a considerable experience of the racing game as an identured horseman. One day this week the writer was pleased to renew’ an ancient acquaintanceship with a veteran of the Southland turf in the person of Mr F. Hewitt, who at the age of 82, continues to take a modest interest in the racing affairs of the home province and is always ready to discuss the province of Southland as an ideal district for the production of high-class and lasting thoroughbreds. In the early days of the local turf Mr Hewitt was mine host of the North Star Hotel, Dee street, and was known as the owner of the first winner of the Winton Derby, a very fine filly called Laburnum, who unfortunately, came to a sad end at a later stage of her career as the result of putting her foot in a rabbithole on the Winton course. In those bygone days the veteran sportsman was associated with quite a number of successful gallopers and jumpers and among them may be mentioned Cathedral, Marjory Moore, Plunger, Ci vis, Heathfield, Aparima and others whose names do not readily occur. In those far off days the Winton. Queenstown and Cromwell Derbies used to attract widespread attention in Southland and Central Otago and led to the breeding of quite a number of useful horses.

The well-known staying handicap performer, Bilbo, came back from his unsuccessful and unlucky trip to Oamaru fresh and well and can be placed as haying benefited by his racing in the White Stone City. With the son of Greyspear and the relatives, Queen Balboa and King Balboa, F. W. Ellis will have three stout long distance gallopers to represent his training establishment at holiday fixtures. The trio mentioned are all very well at present and it will not be for want of racing condition if they should fail to do their mentor credit during the holiday season. The Some Boy ll—Russian Mark mare, Coomassie, who has only had two races during the current season, is to make her debut in open company at the Dunedin J.C. Summer fixture next week. She is to contest the Federal Handicap under the minimum weight (7.0) and will have the assistance of L. J. Ellis as the lad on top. J. McChesney has done well with Coomassie of late and the speedy four-year-old may race well under the weights she will be called upon to carry under her promoted status. She may not prove equal to earning success at her first attempt, but she should run well and a considerable amount of interest will attach to her showing next week, as she is certainly one of the best young racehorses of her sex produced in the south for some years past. Five promising gallopers from local stables are down to race in the Trial Plate at the Wyndham R.C. meeting and although they will meet several more experienced rivals who may beat them, they are almost certain to attract attention and may repay close insoection w’ith a view to future engagements as follows: —Full Fling (J. A. Rowland). Banner Boy (F. W. Ellis), Remindful (F. Muir), Red Boa (G. Hope) and Joan Perkins (F. W. Ellis). W. Stone will race Silver Paper and Aspiring at the Manawatu meeting next week (remarks the Lyttelton Times), after which they may be hurried through to Invercargill, where they have engagements on January 2 and 3. They went north on Thursday night. These two have not done a great deal of fast work lately. Miss Grace Maher, the lady mentor, met with a nasty accident at Awapuni on Wednesday, when pursuing a horse round a paddock. The saddle on the horse she was riding slipped round, and Miss Maher was thrown heavily, breaking several ribs. It is announced that R. Reed will ride Supremacy in the Great Northern Foal Stakes. The latest reports regarding Supremacy are that he has been doing nicely, and his meeting with the southern cracks is being eagerly awaited. With Reed in the saddle he should lost nothing on the score of horsemanship. Clever, winner of both the two-year-old events at the Woodville meeting last week, is a daughter of Psychology and Miss Cute, an English-bred mare by Charles O’Malley. Clever can lay claim to three strains of St. Simon, so that it would be a surprise did she not develop the racing trait. Mr W. T. Hazlett’s gelding, Beacon Light (says a northern writer) is again hors de combat for the time being, which accounts for his absence from acceptance and nomination lists for the’ holiday meetings. While it may be found possible to get him strung up enough to run out a good mile or a mile and a quarter before he finally leaves the track, it is hardly likely that this good horse- and he is a good one—will again be

got fit enough to run out a mile and a half or further. G. New’s apprentice, A. G. Murray, is accompanying Captain Gage Williams to Ellerslie and will ride Staghunter in the Railway Handicap and Catkin in the Auckland Cup. Murray has ridden five winners this season, and his riding has been favourably commented on by competent judges. As he can ride at 7.0, Murray should get a share of riding at the meeting. Last week F. Tilley' was a bit uncertain about Laughing Prince fulfilling his engagement in the Auckland Cup. The Quantock colt has never shown a real liking for a long journey, but his form this season suggests that he now has a better chance of getting a distance than ever he had, and it has been decided that he will be a runner in the big handicap on Boxing Day. With a view to preventing trouble at the start of races such as occurred in Auckland recently, the Greymouth Jockey Club has secured a device consisting of a huge motorhorn, electrically fitted, which will be placed at a suitable distance from the starting post and used to recall a race in the event of a false start. Before the race for the Te Awamutu Cup on Saturday, F. Loomb, trainer of Prodice, who is looked upon as the chief hope of the Aucklanders in the Derby, remarked to an Auckland pressman that he thought she would need a race before being at her best. He certainly summed the position up to a nicety, because it was only in the last furlong that Prodice weakened a little, and though she was fifth at the finish, she was not more than a length and a half away. “That race will do her good, and another before the Derby should see her at her best on Derby day,” said her owner-trainer. The more the acceptance list in connection with the Auckland Cup is studied, the more does the opinion become fixed that the issue of the big race set down for decision at Ellerslie on Boxing Day is extremely open, says the New Zealand Herald. The imported horse, Hoylake, has reached the scene, and. though it would probably have been to his advantage had he been raced at Woodville last week, his condition is noted quite satisfactory. Vertigern’s appearance fully bears out the view that he is a greatly improved horse, and much interest will be centred in his work when he comes to be slackened out. Advices to hand from Wanganui credit Mask with training on splendidly, and he is expected to reach Ellerslie on Thursday. Count Cavour is booked to arrive early, and standing out as he does the best-tested stayer of the field, it goes without saying that much interest is centred in his prospects.
