LIFE IMPRISONMENT
DEATH SENTENCE COMMUTED. (Rec. 10.5 p.m.) Sydney, December 21. Cabinet has commuted to life imprisonment the death sentence on Thomas Butlej’. —Australian Press Association. Thomas Butler, aged 54, a ship’s painter, was convicted of murdering Ellen Egan, with whom he lived at Rozelle. He was recommended for mercy on the ground of drinking habits. He was sentenced to death.
