WYNDHAM NOTES

SCHOOL COMMITTEE. (From Our Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Wyndham District High School Committee was held at the school on Monday evening, Mr. H. Hunter presiding over the following: Messrs R. Richardson, J. A. Munro, A. T. Ross, A. Lindsay, E. Sherbourne (secretary) and P. Campbell. The rector’s report as follows was submitted: The attendance for the month was as follows: Primary roll, boys 128, girls 96; total 224; average, boys 112.9, girls 82.5, total 195.4. secondary roll, boys 13, girls 19, total 32. Average, boys 11.5, girls 17.2, total 28.7. Muss Dillion will be leaving the school at the end of the month for Solway where she has been promoted to infant mistress. I have to thank the local mercantile firms for donations of manure etc., for the school gardens. The Agricultural Club has commenced in Southland, and I am pleased to be able to report that our school has the Largest number of entries. The proficiency examination is to be held on Wednesday December 15. ! I think you should try to arrange a central ; committee in regards to the Manual School and Dental Clinic. It will facilitate matters for next year and ensure support to both manual and our secondary department. The school closes on Wednesday, December 19, and as jhe R.S.A. wish to present the banner to the school at our prize giving, I should like to give them information as Lo the date. Mr. Roydhouse and Miss Dickson, drill instructors, visited the school and the report was quite satisfactory, both complimenting the school on their grounds.—The report was received. The Department of Health wrote advising that Mr. K. D. Elleott, inspecting dental officer, would shortly be visiting the district, when matters relating to the establishing of a dental clinic would be discussed. It was decided that matters in connection with the dental clinic be held over until the visit of the officer. Die resignation of Miss Dillion was accepted with regret and a letter of appreciation of her services to be sent to her. The matter of securing prizes books, etc., was left in the hands of the rector, chairman and secretary to attend to. Messrs Ross and Richardson were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing month. St. Andrew's Society. The monthly meeting of the Wyndham and District St. Andrew’s Scottish Society was held in the Masonic Hall, Wyndham, on Friday evening. Chief Alex Ross presiding over a good attendance of members and associates. The chief in opening proceedings said that it was the first occasion that the society had devoted a night to the Old Timers, who would that night be entrusted with the entertaining of the members. Judging by the list of performers he felt confident that the audience was in for a two-hour treat. The following programme was then submitted, and judging by the applause undoubtedly met with the whole-hearted approval of the meeting: Mr. E. G. Macpherson, song “The March of the Cameron Men”; Mrs J. E. McKay, accordeon selection “Coinin’ Thro’ the Rye,” "There’s Nae Luck Aboot the Hoose” and "The Campbells are Cornin’ ” with pianoforte support by Mrs Alex McArthur; Mr. W. G. Leckie, “Tobermory”; Mr W. Scott, reading, “The Bapteesin’ the Bairns,” Mr. A. Laidlaw song, "The Scottish Emigrant’s Farewell” ; Mrs W. Davis, song, “The Belle of Mohawk Vale”; Mr A. W. Archibald, humorous song, “The wee thing that Jaggit Them A”; Pipers J. McDonald and W. Cochrane, pipe selection, “Athol Highlanders” ; Mrs E. Hargest, song, “Hail Caledonia” ; Mrs W. Allison Snr., song, “The Highlanders”; Mr J. McDonald, Gaelic song; Mr. A. H. Jones, "Mary of Argyle”; song, Mrs E. Hargest, “I can't Remember” and "The Little Garden.” Community singing was heartily participated in during the course of the entertainment. Mr E. G. Macpherson was the principal accompanist. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the performers, etc., on the call of Chieftain D. Christie. Concert. A very successful concert and dance, in aid of the candidature of Miss Rita Clarke, Eastern District Princess in the Southland A. and P. Society’s carnival, was held in the Seaward Downs Hall on Friday evening. Mr. P. Arnott occupied the chair, and had Messrs A. Horne and J. Milne associated with him on the platform.

Songs were contributed by Mrs W. Irvine, Misses I. Tither, Smith, McCall, Messrs D. Macpherson, A. Jones, D. Leckie, McNaugh and Chapman; recitations by Masters Wyeth and Carswell; pianoforte duet by Misses Clarke; vocal duets by Messrs Leckie and Macpherson, and violin selections by Mr. McLean. During the proceedings competitions for a doll and a box of cigarettes were won by Miss M. Frame and Mr. P. Arnott respectively. The venture was the means of enlarging the princess fund to the extent of over £l6. Tennis. The following teams will represent Wyndham Tennis Club in its engagements today : A Grade v. Mataura, at Wyndham: Henderson, Hannan, Jones and Barnett. Mrs Werry, Misses Cranstoun, Barnett and Mrs Traynor. B. Grade v. Citizens’, at Gore: Mayston, McFaul!, Heath, and Werry. Misses Baird, Allison, Wilson and Mrs Ball. A. and P. Carnival. A very enjoyable concert and dance was held in the Town Hall, Wyndham, on Monday evening, in aid of the Eastern District Princess (Miss R. Clarke) in connection with the Southland A. and P. Carnival. The programme of vocal and instrumental items was provided by an Invercargill and Gore party, and was highly appreciated by the large attendance present. Mr A. M. Weir presided and at a suitable interval explained the object of the carnival and expressed pleasure at the attendance. The doortakings amounted to in the vicinity of £lB, which must be considered very satisfactory.
