CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

THE GORE BODY. MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Gore Chamber of Commerce held last evening was attended by Messrs R. S. Green (chairman), A. L. Dolamore, J. Brownlie, A. Campbell, T. Sherbourn and A. H. Aitken. Correspondence. A letter was received from the Dunedin Chamber advising that it had not relaxed its efforts to arouse interest in connection with the Bluff-Melbourne shipping service. As previously advised the Prime Minister was unable to meet a deputation until after the election, and in order that the matter might be kept before him the chamber wrote to him asking for a definite reply as to date. It was also made known to him that letters to hand indicated that the question was arousing considerable interest in Victoria and Tasmania, and as the latter wished to be represented at the deputation, ample notice should be given of the date fixed. Several Dunedin business firms had written to business men in Melbourne, and satisfactory replies had been received. A pleasing feature was the amending of the Navigation Act. The New Zealand Trade Commissioner, Melbourne, had written stating that the Chambers of Commerce both in Melbourne and Tasmania were interesting themselves in the movement, and the Dunedin Chamber could be sure of their support and co-operation in any action taken likely to have the desired result. Replies from parliamentary candidates in Canterbury, Otago and Southland to the Dunedin Chamber’s letter asking them if they would support the first and second resolutions passed at the conference at Dunedin in September were satisfactory. The Dunedin Chamber would advise all concerned when word was received from the Prime Minister.—Received. The Minister of Justice advised that he was unable to comply with the chamber’s request for the appointment of a resident magistrate for Gore—Received. The question of holding a British Empire shopping week in Gore was discussed, and the matter was referred to a sub-committee for a report to the quarterly meeting of the chamber to be held next month.
