EDENDALE NEWS

SWIMMING CLUB. (From Our Correspondent.) A meeting of those interested in the proposal to construct a swimming bath at Edendale was held on Monday night, the Rev. R. D. McEwan occupying the chair. The progress to date was outlined by the chairman, who stated that as directed by the committee at their last meeting, he had arranged for the installation of water pipes in the dairy factory boiler room for heating the water to be supplied to the bath. This part of the job was now completed, and the next business before the meeting was the arrangement of a concert and bazaar to take place in the near future. The date of the concert was fixed as the 25th inst., and it was decided to go ahead with preparations for a bazaar to be held on November 7 and 8. A full discussion of the various proposals made by those present then ensued, and the outline of a very interesting and varied programme was agreed to. It is hoped that during the bazaar it will be possible to run a tug-of-war comeptition baby show, baking competition and many other attractions, and, as the object of the bazaar is to secure funds for the construction of a public swimming bath it should be well patronized. The *necessity of such a bath has been fully recognized by a large number of residents in the district and they have subscribed a considerable sum of money towards the undertaking. More funds are still necessary, however, if the baths are to be proceeded with in time to be available this summer, and if, through the means being available for children to learn "to swim, only one child’s life is saved it will be worth all the trouble and expense that is entailed. The young people of the district would also be able to indulge in a healthv and invigorating sport, in perfect safety, and without the necessity of a long journey to the sea shore. Arrangements were made for a ladies’ committee to be formed to deal with catering and other matters in connection with the bazaar and this matter was left in the hands of Mrs McEwan.
