GOLF CHAMPIONS

PLAY AT DUNEDIN AMATEUR AND PROFESSIONAL TITLES SLOAN MORPETH DEFEATED (Per United Press Association.) Dunedin, October 16. There was a very agreeable change in the weather to-day for the first round of the professional golf championship and the first and second rounds of the amateur golf championship. The wind changed to a northerly breeze which freshened as the day advanced. The course has improved greatly and some excellent golf was produced. There were two surprises, the downfall of the open champion S. Morpeth at the hands of C. B. Wight and the Fryer-Sime match which lasted to the 22nd green. Amateur Championship. Ist Round, 18 holes. S. Morpeth beat H. C. Stevens 7 and 6. C. B. Wight beat A. R. Blank 4 and 3. H. W. Macfarlane beat M. Macbeth, 1 up at the 19th. J. L. Black beat N. Louisson 2 and 1. H. P. Dale beat C. A. Seymour 2 up. J. G. D. Duncan beat R. Wagg 2 and 1. S. C. Colbeck beat J. E. Matheson 4 and 3. D. Grant beat J. Goss 1 up at the 19th. T. H, Horton beat M. Duncan 3 and 1. D. H. Butcher beat W. B. Reilly 1 up. H. A. Black beat J. D. Lawrence 1 A. G. Sime beat H. Fryer 1 up at the 22nd. B. V. .Wright beat E. J. Pumphrey 2 and 1. J. Millard beat G. Richmond 1 up. K. Ross beat W. G. Wight 5 and 4. Second round 18 holes. C. B. Wight beat S. Morpeth 4 and 2. J. L. Black beat H. W. Macfarlane 4 and 3. J. G. D. Duncan beat. H. P. Dale 1 up. S. C. Colbeck beat D. Grant 4 and 3. T. H. Horton beat E. Macfarlane 4 and 3. H. A. Black beat D. H. Butcher 4 and 3. A. G. Sime beat B. V. Wright 4 and 2. K. Ross beat J. Millard 4 and 3. Professional Championship. (Ist round, 36 holes.) A. J. Shaw beat J. R. Galloway 6 and 5. E. S. Douglas beat G. Forrest 3 and 2. J. A. Clements beat R. C. Butters 2 and 1. J. Mclntosh beat F. Branch 1 up. GENERAL NOTES. A Bogey handicap was won by E. J. Pumphrey (Christchurch) handicap 1, with a score of 1 down. Morpeth produced a 73 in the morning round, finishing with a brilliant 3 and he was a hard proposition for Stevens in his first championship. C. B. Wight had no anxiety in his match against A. R. Blank. H. W. Macfarlane and M. Macbeth fought . hard all the way. The match was square at the 15th and decided at the 19th. The young Aucklander, Neill Louisson, made an excellent showing against J. L. Black, holding him till the 15th. Seymour had the advantage of Dale at the 13th but the Eltham player came home very strongly. Colbeck had an easy game against Matheson. The Wellingtonians John Duncan and Rana Wagg had an even game. The former played the steadier. Grant and Goss played good long games, Grant surviving by a good 4 at the 19th. Horton required to do a 75 to shake off Morgan Duncan. Ewen Macfarlane showed a little glimpse of his true form in accounting for Dr. Barnett. O’Reilly did not produce the golf that he played in the qualifying round. J. D. Lawrence for his first championship did very well to stand up so well to Harold Black. Fryer Is a regular championship player but to-day was his best effort when he stuck to Sime till the 22nd. In this match only two holes had been won up to the 14th and it continued even till the 22nd. Both missed chances of a win at the 20th and 21st by missing shorts puts. J. Millard had to record a good game to defeat Richmond who came home in 37. Dr. Ross avenged his Easter defeat by W. G. Wight by beating his opponent by a good margin. A feature of the afternoon’s play was that five of the eight matches were easily won by 4 and 3. The only close one was between Dale and Duncan. Horton had no difficulty in accounting for E. M. Macfarlane and his figures to-day were excellent, viz., 75—73. After producing a 73 in the morning and notwithstanding Chris Wight’s good play through the tournament, it was anticipated that Morpeth would survive the second round but Wight was not to be denied and his 75 was too good for the open champion. In the run home Wight scored 7 consecutive 4’s. Ross played brilliantly against Millard. At the 15th where the match ended his score was 2 under fours. After his hard game with Fryer, Sime continued to show his fighting spirit against the Timaru player B. V. Wright. His superiority was manifest in the short work. The Christchurch player E. J. Pumphrey put up a good performance in winning the bogey handicap with a card of 1 down from the one mark. In his out round he had the unique experience of 9 consecutive fours. It is claimed that this is a record. Among the professionals, A. J. Shaw is playing perfect, golf, especially his long game, and it will be a duel between him and Mclntosh for the professional championship. Douglas’s good work is only spasmodic. This morning he was weak but he levelled up in the afternoon and rattled out in 36 assuring him of a win over Forrest who has improved his game a great deal. Clements is showing glimpses of his form of a few years ago when he was in winning vein. Branch, the Hamilton professional, put up a good performance to-day. Playing against Mclntosh he was 6 down at (he 27th but took the next 5 holes. The 35th was halved and he missed an easy putt at the 36th to be square. With the elimination of Morpeth on the top half of the draw, C. B. Wight has come into the picture and a repetition of to-day’s play should place him in the final but between Ross, Sime end Horton at the bottom of the draw it is difficult to suggest the survivor.
