Hints for the Home
Glass does not dull so quickly if it is washed as follows: Mix a little whiting with some bluewater, and add to a bowl of warm soapy water. The bristles of hair brushes that have become soft through repeated washing may be stiffened again by dipping them in a strong solution of alum and then drying them speedily. A shallow frying-pan, or an ordinary pan with too much fat in it, will splutter grease over the whole stove, but not if a pinch or two of fine salt is placed in the pan before use. Scrape half-a-dozen peeled potatoes into a bucket half full of warm water. Strain, and ring a cloth out of the potato water. With it give the carpet, previously well beaten, a good rub over, rinsing frequently. The carpet will have a wonderfully fresh appearance after this process.
