Two Smart Periodicals

. From Thomson and Beattie’s, Ltd., I I have received the Autumn number of the • “Butterick Quarterly” along with the August “Delineator,” two periodicals which have improved beyond all conception since i I last saw them. The first devoted entirely I to fashions, patterns of which are obtain- ; able, reveals the rtend of the new modes J without apparently losing any of their I charm in being adapted for the home dressmaker. Unlike the vogue of recent years, of course, frocks are losing that rigid simplicity which accompanied Eton crops and flat heels, and with the reappearance of I waves and curls and loosely draped hair, : there are the inevitable frills and flounces ! and tucks and smoks and falling draperies. This makes the making of a frock more l of an achievement, certainly; but there is ino doubt that the linen will be more diffij cult to follow, so that the cleverer the • fingers the greater the effect will be.. The I advantage of the “Butterick Quarterly” is i that not only is the reader given frock designs in every suggested variety, but also receives what can be taken as individual advice on what to wear and the way to wear it. All figures are catered for, and for the unimaginative there is an arrangement of colour schemes which leaves little to be desired. I was particularly pleased to find • that advice for complete outfits is being i supplied and illustrated. In this number I there is a detailed account of a baby’s re- ; quirements, not only in garments but in 'layette and other accessories; there is also ■ a scheme carried out for the young girl at ! boarding school —indeed, the needs of the i children are admirably attended to. The art section shows designs and notions both | pleasing and practical, a combination which seems to be the key-note of this publication, i which I think every woman could appreciI ate. The “Delineator” I will leave till next ’week.—E. H. 0.
