STRIDES IN AUSTRALIA. LANDING GROUNDS NEEDED. Sydney, September 13. Commercial aviation is getting a strong footing in Australia. Several firms make use of aeroplanes to enable their representatives to visit country districts. More interest will, however, need to be shown by people in the rural centres if aviation is to advance as it should. The chief difficulty is the lack of suitable landing grounds. Mast of the country centres have not yet awakened to the need for providing landing areas for visiting aeroplanes. They are content to let things stay as they are, and allow the airman to land as best he can. The matter is too big for the Government to take up, but it is urged that the municipal authorities in each town should keep step with the times by providing a suitable aerodrome. One or two of the important centres are awaking to the fact that to entice trade they require more than a railway station. The Advance Bendigo League, in Victoria, for example, believes that an aerodrome is a necessity to an inland city. Keen on keeping Bendigo up to date, the league is exploring every avenue that offers the possibility of providing a landing ground.
