SWIMMING.

MURIHIKU CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Murihiku Swimming Club was held last evening, Mr J. R. Martin presiding over a fair attendance of members. The annual report presented to the meeting was as follows:—The 1927-1928 season was the first of the above club and that there was considerable interest displayed was proved by the enrolment of about 120 members of all classes. Members young and old had taken considerable activity in the newly opened public swimming baths. A club carnival was held in the borough baths on February 29, 1928, but there had been a heavy loss, although the club had the satisfaction of helping to keep the sport of swimming before the public, and therefore should feel that the loss was not without recompense. A lengthy programme was put through, 29 events and the heavy number of prizes being the direct cause of the loss. The attendance was also not what it might have been. The club’s thanks are due to the following who gave prizes and 4onations: Messrs J. Wilson, W. A. Brown, Pierce, Martin, Dr. Barclay, B. C. Galloway, H. Ashley, H. Dunlop, W. Todd and Co., A. Wilson, J. B. Thomson, also the Invercargill A.S.C., Old High School pupils, and the Bluff A.S.C. for services rendered at our carnival. The club had been fortunate in securing for its first president Mr J. R. Martin, who was an enthusiastic swimmer and who had taken a keen interest ip the club in all wa™ and had done a great deal of work for other clubs. The committee had also worked in a way which left no grounds for complaint and have to be congratulated for the work of the club’s first season. The men’s section of the club had been very successful in the various galas in the past season, winning several prizes at the Lumsden Club’s Gala. The ladies had taken little part in the galas of the past year, but as the club has some very promising talent it is to be hoped that the ladies will have a successful time in e the near future. Mr L. Stubbs, a member of the club, had given lessons to the members of all clubs interested, and his services had been much appreciated by all. The club had, on attaining the desired number of season tickets, been granted the hour from 5.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. on Tuesday evenings in the baths, but owing to the unsuitability of the hour, it had not been of any material advantage to the club. It is hoped that the club will have a successful time in future years and keep up the good work it had already taken in hand. The thanks of the club are due to our retiring secretary for the great amount of work accomplished during the year. The report and balance-sheet, whiih showed a satisfactory credit balance, were adopted. The following were elected office-bearers for the ensuing year: Patron, Dr. Barclay; president, Mr H. Ashley; vice-presidents, Messrs J. R. Martin, J. A. Wilson, S. A. Lindsay, T. S. Tomlinson, J. McDonald, W. A. Brown, R. M. Strang, F. J. Logan. W. Grieve; secretary and treasurer, Mr N. Mackenzie; club captain, Mr R. Keast; deputy club captain, Mr M. A. Hunt; ladies’ club captain, Miss A. Latta; deputy chib captain, Miss M. Greenwood; committee, Messrs F. Johnson, A. Kidd, L. Cockroft, L. Stubbs, G. F. Hurworth, J. Clarke, N. Hamilton, H. Dunlop; delegates to centre, Messrs J. R. Martin and J. A. Wilson. It was stated that a swimming centre had already been formed and it was only necessary for the various clubs to support it whole-heartedly for it to be recognized by the association. A vote of thanks was passed to the Press for its assistance towards swimming generally. It was decided to write to the baths committee advising that the usual hour set aside for the club was not suitable. Subscriptions for the season were fixed as follows: Senior 3/6, juniors 1/6 and school children 1/-. It was. decided to hold the club night every Monday evening, a committee meeting to take place at 7.30.
