COMPULSORY IN CIVIL SERVICE. SUBJECT FOR EXAMINATIONS. (Rec. 10.35 p.m.) London, October 15. The Dublin correspondent of The Times states that the Free State Government announces a new “push” in the compulsory propagation of the Irish language. Mr E. Blythe. Minister of Finance, speaking at the Gaellic Society’s meeting, said that henceforward all members of the civil service must possess a competent knowledge of Irish which at present is a compulsory subject in all civil service examinations. This test will be strengthened by further examination within two years of the candidate’s admission. Those failing tto pass will be compelled to leave the service. It is also proposed to make Irish a compulsory’ subject in the entrance examinations for the Bar and solicitors’ profession, —Times Cables.
