Nurse Turnbull applied for a level crossing to her section in Elizabeth Street.—Granted. D. Stewart applied for permission to put a hut on the road-line near the corner *ot Main and Crombie Streets, the hut to be lighted at night and to be removed as soon as building operations were completed.— Granted. T. A. Pearce wrote offering £1 for the fallen timber lying in the old cemetery reserve. —Offer accepted. The District Highways Council advised that the question of width of sealing main highways in boroughs and town districts was considered at a meeting on September 20, when it was decided that in future the board would subsidize in the business area up to a width of 66 feet, and on the remaining portions the board’s subsidy would be limited to a width of 30 feet. No general information could be given to “business area” but each individual case would be dealt with on its merits. A further letter from the Highways Council in regard to the proposals submitted by the Gore Borough for tar sealing Main Street, stated that foundations required to be tested either by holes or trenches and the results forwarded to the Highways Council together with a sketch showing locations. — Received. Mrs A. Fraser applied for a rebate of half the annual rates due in respect of the Carrington Hotel ior the year 1928-29. The applicant stated chat the hotel was burned down in 1927 and had since been unoccupied. Renovation, with a view to reoccupation was being carried out.—Referred to finance committee for report. Works Committee. The Works Committee recommended in connection with tar sealing of Main Street that as the Main Highways Board insisted on test holes being made in Main Street and a report supplied thereon, the engineer be instructed to make the necessary tests and forward plan showing same to the board. The committee reported in connection with the fence on the Croydon Domain and recommended that if Mr. Kerr desired to have a fence erected between his property and the Domain, he pay half cost of same.—The report was adopted. General. The Mayor reported that his attention had been drawn to water coming from off the Gore experimental area. It appeared that the Agricultural Department had dug a ditch in order to drain the property and that the carried the water out on the open road on the hill past the dairy factory. The water took a great deal of sod with it which had blocked up the water channels, with the result that a local resident’s cellar had been flooded. A number of sacks of wheat and bran in the cellar had been damaged and a claim had been made upon the council. He suggested that the Department be advised that it must divert its storm water into the Thistle Street sewer and that it be asked to meet any claim for compensation.—The Mayor’s suggestion was adopted by the council.
