LUMSDEN NOTES

AMATEUR PERFORMANCE. (From Our Correspondent.) For some months past the residents of Lumsden have eagerly awaited the staging of Pinero’s three-act farce “Dandy Dick” by the Lumsden players. When the curtain rose on Thursday evening a packed house greeted the performers, and the large audience was delighted with the performance. The members of the party had been practising assiduously for a considerable period and their efforts were well rewarded on Thursday, when one of the largest audiences ever seen in Lumsden assembled at Crawford’s Hall. The efforts of those taking part in the farce were favourably commented on and the success of the function must have been very gratifying to the producer, Mr Ted Wildey. The scenery and costumes were in keeping with the high standard of the performance and the musical numbers by the Blue Bird Orchestra were greatly appreciated. The lighting effects added greatly to the appearance of the stage which was made to represent the drawing room at the Deanery of St. Marnells. The Rev. G. H. Lawrence, as the Dean of St. Marvels, was in great form, and although he had a difficult part, his performance reflects great credit upon him. A great deal of the success of the farce was due to the excellent manner in which Mrs M. K. Brown played the part of Georgiana Tidman, the Dean’s widowed sister. Mr W. G. Wright, as Sir Tristram Mardon, had an important role and he acquitted himself well, his interpretation of some pieces of the farce being most entertaining. The high standard of the performance was maintained by the remainder of the company, who are to be congratulated on the success attained at the initial appearance of the local society. A word of praise is due to the stage manager, Mr T. Wildey, who carried out his duties in a capable manner. It is the intention of the party to show at other centres in the district, where they should receive the hearty support it merits. At the conclusion of the performance a dance was held, a fair number of couples taking part. Golf. A sealed hole match was played at the golf links on Thursday, when Mrs Hunter was successful in winning the trophy. The final of the men’s championship has not yet been decided, but as soon as the match has been played arrangements will be made for a closing day. Personal. Constable Boyle arrived in Lumsden on Thursday to take charge of the Lumsden station. Constable E. Fraser, who has been relieving officer for some months, has returned to Invercargill. Mr John Fraster, of Christchurch, who was stationmaster at Lumsden for a number of years and has now retired on superannuation, is at present visiting the district renewing acquaintances. Mr A. Glass visited Lumsden on Thursday for the purpose of forming a committee to further the candidature of Mr Adam Hamilton at the forthcoming elections. A strong committee was appointed. School Jubilee. A meeting of ex-pupils of the Lumsden School is to be held on Tuesday, when arrangements will be made for the forthcoming jubilee celebrations.
