“A GODSEND”
THE ELLERSLIE DISTURBANCE. COMMENT BY CLERIC. (Per United Press Association.) Christchurch, October 13. Dr. J. J. North referred to the recent disturbance at Ellerslie racecourse (Auckland) when seconding a resolution against gambling at the Baptist Union Conference. “I live close to Ellerslie racecourse,” Dr. North said. “It is a perfect little paradise, but the other afternoon it was turned into a perfect hell.” He said that a race was never fair. People were being quietly “had" by all sorts of folk. The other afternoon they got a sudden eye-opener. It was a wonder they did not pull the pavilion down in their anger. “Why did they get so angry?" Dr. North asked. The worst passions were there. He considered that the Ellerslie race meeting incident was a Godsend because it held up the glass and let people see what was going on.
