HERD TESTING

MATAURA ISLAND ASSOCIATION. (From Our Correspondent.) The following is the report of the Mataura Island Herd Testing Association, to be presented at the annual meeting to-morrow: From the figures already published it will be seen, that 25 herds were tested with a total of 1046 cows. The most gratifying part of the work is the average yield keeps going up and up. In 192526 season the average yield was 194.15; 1926-27, 201.09; 1927-28, 220.82. This proves that your testing is doing really good work and should be whole heartily supported. The work of the season was carried out to the satisfaction of all concerned, by Mr F. R. Christie, your official tester. Mr Christie now wishes to return his thanks to the many kindnesses extended to him during his work. The cost of maintaining the association has been 3/- per cow to all members and 3/6 to new members, which is a very low cost. Application has been made to the Government for the herd tasting subsidy. This was duly received on September 9. Payments were made to suppliers on September 10, and although we were prompt in sending out the pavments we regret to state that there are still a few receipts not to hand, and which has been the means of delaying your annual meeting. The thanks of the subscribers are due to the Government for its assistance to the association, which goes to prove that it is keenly interested in the welfare of herd testing. The committee desires to impress upon dairymen that it is to their own interests to support your association.
