CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, October 12. The following remits were carried at the Dominion Conference of New Zealand Chambers of Commerce: The conference again brings under the notice of the Government the urgency for the cancellation of the C.O.D. system between other countries and New Zealand, which is seriously affecting traders of the Dominion who are subject to taxes, rates, rents, etc.; the conference protests against Government trading ventures being accorded the protection of the Crown Suits Act and considers where the Crown is a litigant in respect of trading ventures, it should be bound by the same rules and laws as operate between subject and subject, the executive to promote a Bill that inasmuch as legislation is frequently enacted before provincial chambers are aware of details, it is desirable that with a view to keeping such chambers informed of new legislation, the association appoint a competent person at a salary, if necessary, to peruse all Parliamentary Bills brought down, affecting commercial interests and to report thereon to various chambers, costs to be provided if necessary, by a levy on various chambers; that it is desirable that the Government set up a commission to consider the question of unemployment and chambers of commerce to prepare evidence to lay before such commission; that the Government be urged to consider the possibility of securing a more regular and more frequent service between South Island ports and Melbourne.
