BOILER EXPLODES
POWER HOUSE WRECKED. ENGINE DRIVER SEVERELY INJURED. (Per United Press Association.) Greymouth, October 12. The dome of one boiler at the State Coal Mines power house, Rewanui, exploded at 3.30 p.m. to-day and caused serious injury to George Gardiner, engine driver. The explosion forced the boiler two feet forward, pinning Gardiner by one leg and wrecking the power house. It required a couple of hours to extricate Gardiner whose leg was very severely mangled. He was sent to hospital about 8.15 p.m. Inspection of the boiler after the explosion did not reveal deterioration in any of the plates and the cause of the explosion as yet is unknown. A further inspection will be made in daylight to-morrow.
