WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

WAIKAKA BRANCH. (From Our Correspondent.) Meetings of the Waikaka branch of the Women’s Institute were held on Tuesday and Wednesday last, when Mrs Elder (president of the Waituna branch) gave interesting demonstrations in several branches of handcraft. Despite the boisterous and unseasonable weather a very large number of members and friends attended the demonstrations, in which a very keen interest was taken. The branch president, Mrs Gutschlag, presided, and on behalf of the members, extended a cordial welcome to Mrs Elder and thanked her for the interest she had taken in the local branch. Mrs Eider congratulated the branch upon the progress made since its formation and gave an interesting outline of the founding and advancement of the movement in the South Island. In many centres handcraft work and competitions of various kinds formed an important feature of the institute’s activities and did a great deal to retain the interest of members. In the course of a very instructive demonstration of handcraft work Mrs Elder dealt with basket-work, soft tray-making and papier-mache work, a number of articles being completed by members under her direction. On Wednesday evening a social hour was spent, several members contributing items. After supper had been served, Mrs Gutschlag moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mrs Elder for her instructive and enjoyable demonstrations. The vote was carried with acclamation. Mrs Elder returned north on Thursday morning.
